John rescues Emma - an excerpt from RULES OF COMMAND

Months ago, after Rules of War was released, Staci from Lazy Day asked if I'd thought of writing a sequel. I'd already given it some thought, but I decided I wanted to write a companion book to Rules of War instead...to tell the same story, but from John's POV this time. I told Staci about my idea and said the book would be called Rules of Command. She liked the idea, so I got to writing!

Rules of Command will release tomorrow, and I'm so so excited about this book. It's the first time I've written a book entirely from the hero's POV, and I really bonded with John throughout the process. Many secrets the reader isn't privy to in Rules of War are revealed in Rules of Command, and my favorite part of the book is the very end - an epilogue that shows what Emma and John are up to two years after the end of both books.

Here's an excerpt from Rules of Command:

Breathing through the smoke, he crouched down as the building collapsed, waiting for the thunderous tremors to stop so he could sweep the scene one last time. Anyone trapped inside was likely dead, but he felt obligated to help if someone was buried alive. He held no grudge against American civilians, and throughout his missions up and down the East Coast, he had come to consider many of them friends. Free Islanders and Americans shared the same goal – for the war to end as soon as possible. Peace loomed in the distance like a whispered promise. A beautiful promise. It was close. So close. John suspected he would not see battle again once he returned to Deep Creek. And that was fine by him.

His goggles zeroed in on an unmoving orange-red form inside the smoldering building. One survivor. Instinct and training propelled him forward. He slipped on his protective gloves and an oxygen mask, watching as Martin and Luke did the same. The three of them worked as a team, crawling through a window and searching for the best passage to the orange-red glow. Many of the walls still stood, and John led the way through the rubble as the structure creaked, threatening to collapse around them at any moment.

The glow of the body drew closer, until only a wall separated John from it. Luke pulled a strong handheld laser from his pocket, and John nodded his approval. A short blue flame cut a man-size hole cut in the wall, and Luke curled his gloved hands into fists and punched it out. John jumped through the entrance first. He immediately spotted the slumped form on the floor.

Rushing to the survivor, he gently turned her over on her back. Long blonde curls fell from her face. A thin nightgown was bunched up around her waist, and a bruise was forming on her forehead. Her eyes were clamped shut, though he detected a faint pulse. Working fast, he removed an emergency oxygen mask from his supply belt and placed it over her nose and mouth.

"It’s going to be okay," he said, scooping her up in his arms. "Let’s get you out of here, princess."

Rules of Command blurb:

His prisoner...his wife...his passion.

Love is the last thing on Commander John Rousseau's mind when he claims an American woman as his wife. He's simply following orders - although he is drawn to Emma's soft skin and sweet nature, despite her outspoken reluctance to accept him as her husband. Determined to tame her, he promises to spank her for disobedience, and she soon finds out he's a man of his word.

As Emma comes to grips with her marriage to a strict Free Island soldier and struggles to obey his many rules, she finds her heart softening to him. John holds her at a distance at first, but as the passion between them flares, a deep intimacy and mutual trust takes root. An impending battle finally prompts confessions of love...but will it be too late for these unlikely lovers?

You don't need to read Rules of War to understand what's going on in Rules of Command. The two books can stand alone, but if you're interested in hearing Emma's version of events, you can find Rules of War on Amazon US, Amazon UK, Barnes and Noble, All Romance, and Lazy Day Publishing.

See you tomorrow with another excerpt from Rules of Command...and maybe, just maybe, a chance to win an Amazon giftcard!
