“I’m sorry about the other night.” Sam’s voice sounded weary.

They hadn’t spoken in a couple of days, though they’d kept in touch via text. Val didn’t like it, but she understood. Things were well underway with Sam’s divorce and, though he hadn’t discussed the details with her yet, she got the impression that his meeting with Karen hadn’t gone well. She didn’t want to add to the pressure, so she gave him the space he seemed to need.
