Comment on Thoughts on Spiritual Practices by Rob
I enjoyed the illustration of the finger/moon, the key being to see, savor and worship Christ. Thank you. There is also much to behold in His creation that spurs our worship of Him, which you pointed out as well. I feel we all too often forget the creativity and diversity displayed by our God as a Creator.
I have a few thoughts below and some questions that I really mean to ask. This isn’t just a troll rant
.
I wonder perhaps if you see a danger to your approach, especially in terms of eastern forms of meditation and creative spiritual practices.
Meditation, biblically, and spiritual practices were based on the Scriptures as they reveal Him (Joshua 1:8, Psalm 19, Psalm 119).
How do you protect yourself from redefining Jesus in these practices?
If we try to ‘experience Jesus’ however we feel draws us closer to Him, how can we be sure we’re actually getting closer to Him and not just our profound experience?
We may find ourselves in idolotry. For example, it’s doubtful that the Canaanites worshipped Baal because they didn’t enjoy it. Surely they did.
I do know that experience is necessary but can it stand on its own? How do you interpret your experiences, beyond what just feels good?
The danger I see is that experience can be subjective. Whereas the experience of joy in our study of the Bible is centered around truth, or at least should be.
Which finally brings me to my big question, do you believe that the Bible is inerrant and sufficient to get our truths about God? Or can experience or church tradition step infront of the Bible at any time?
Thank you!
