Q: Who was your favorite/most challenging character to write in Teardrop?
A: I loved developing the voice of Eureka. She’s a very private girl who exposes her true self to only a few trusted friends. Luckily, the reader (and the writer) get to be one of those friends. Eureka may be closed off to her father, her father’s wife, and many of the kids at school, but her beautiful imagination is entirely open to the reader. She’s often thinking something far different from what she says or how she acts. I really relate to this aspect of Eureka. Exploring that duality (outward expression vs. inner imagination) made her an immensely rich and complex character to get to know.
