Defiance

So, apologies for the long absence. Things have been CRAZY in the Reasby household lately, what with the two of us trying to get new books out, ECCC, and other life events. However, I’m back now, so expect more activity in the coming weeks.
If you’ve been following postings on the Talaria website (and if you haven’t, why on earth not?!), you’ll have seen my recommended viewing post regarding the new television/game project put out by Syfy and Trion called Defiance. Without doubt, I’m extremely excited about both the show and the game. It presents a unique and beautiful world with a rich background and unique alien cultures.
I genuinely love the world of Defiance and have been eagerly sharing what I’ve learned so far about the history from the website and this awesome guide (it’s free!) with anyone who’ll listen. I’m extremely eager to learn more about Defiance and its world.
This unprecedented show/game combination is definitely one of my new addictions.
So, here’s the idea I’ve recently had:
I’d love to see prequel novels and/or story collections that tell the story of how the Votans came to travel to Earth, the attempts to come to a colonization agreement with Earth, the Pale Wars.. the opportunities are nearly endless!
I know that the usual procedure for doing such things is to approach well-known, established writers, but with this being such a ground-breaking concept that is trying to break the mold with how the show and game are entwined, I have another proposal: why not open the world up to “auditions” for newer authors.
Allow lesser known authors to submit a story/novel proposal, a writing sample, and bibliography.
From there, if the proposal and writing sample are good, have a phone or skype interview where the author can show their passion for the source material.
It seems to me that doing something like this would be a great opportunity for Syfy to discover new talent and also give some newer authors a chance to gain a wider audience.
New Earth. New Rules.
