Deleted Previous Posts

Hi everyone. You'll notice I've deleted all my previous blog posts. You won't find them here any more because I'm not sure how Amazon might decide to use them. I won't be stopping in as often, unfortunately, as I'm uncomfortable with Amazon's ownership of Goodreads, Shelfari and other book review sites. You can always find me on other social networking sites. I realize they are information gathering monsters, too. But I don't believe a book clearinghouse should have a monopoly on book review sites. That is all kinds of wrong.

Lyn I agree. I guess there is no way we could move our book information to another site.

Michael What's wrong with Amazon?

Denise MacDonald Is Amazon owning Goodreads a new thing? Why wouldn't an author want to be participate in a website run by a company that sells books? It seems like a great way to promote yourself and your books.

message 4: by Ellen (new)

Ellen Hopkins Goodreads has, up until now, been an independent review site. They have not, up until now, gathered our information to use for their own purposes. Amazon will now do that. Amazon does not have my permission to gather, use or redistribute my information or posts I place here. I have plenty of readers, and don't believe Amazon's drive to own all things publishing serves anyone well. Not even book buyers.

Ellen Hopkins Do you really think it's a good thing for a mega-company like Amazon to "manage" all book reviews? That's where this is headed.

message 6: by Denise (new)

Denise MacDonald I read a bit about this since my last post. I think the only way to prevent information being gathered on the web in general is to not put it out there. I don't see how Amazon accessing the books I read and the reviews I write is going to make much difference to them. I can post the same information on their website now. I guess I don't really understand what "managing" book reviews means. Are they going to start approving or not approving our reviews? Will they pick and choose what authors books can be on this site?

Tara I hate that you're deleting your posts, but I do agree with your reasons, the mega corps are abusive in what they request and access

message 8: by Lyn (new)

Lyn I hate that Amazon will be my only choice if I buy through this website. They haven't changed the "buy" buttons yet, but that's the way it is on Shelfari.

That said, I do often buy things from Amazon. I just like having a choice.

James the Greatest I was dismayed too when I learned that Amazon was acquiring so many book review sites. it's impressive how information gathering is turned in big-company profit. although I regret your future possible absence here on Goodreads, I whole-heartedly respect and support your decision. <3 write on, Ellen!!
