Men and Dreams in the Dhauladhars... a very fine novel.. which inspires continuous reading without break!! This, despite the large quantity of vernacular jargon and references...
The research into vast sub-regions of the Himalayas, the pulse, aspirations of the people....., the driving forces on their culture & life styles.... their fears prejudices and loyalties... are very telling in the quality of the narrative..... and is a compelling factor on the inquisitive reader whose regular sources of scattered and disjoint information on these are the crude media presentations, where facts on ground are always left out of reckoning.
The narrative of the industrial march to reach the far remote Himalayan valleys, which today hold promise for huge wealth generation, albeit one fraught with danger.... the brilliant and the well rounded descriptions of technical operations of hydro-plant engineering... have been well balanced with the stories of grime, sweat and transience of lives of individuals, who make it all happen and are forgotten... to keep the interest of a reader on, without becoming tedious.
Similarly, the stories of streams that flow into the Dhauladhars, from the innermost recesses of technological and spiritual temples, across the globe, and the distant, but very real influences of the geniuses that abound there on every aspect of modern life, have also been brilliantly traced.... and led into the Dhauladhars.
