Countdown to publication day!

The City of Silk and Steel hits the bookshops on Thursday, a scant three days from now. Gollancz have featured us on their blog today, where they've published the first part of Tales of the Seven Djinni - a suite of interlocking short stories that Lin, Lou and I wrote before City's US publication.

Please check it out. It's separate from the novel and completely free-standing, but it does feature (extensively) the seven djinni who appear in the novel, and there's a brief glimpse of Rem, the character who narrates the novel.

Also, go ahead and sign up for our giveaway if you haven't done so already. Five copies of the beautiful Gollancz hardcover edition will be given away, with winners announced on publication day...

El Enjoyed that, thanks! I'm looking forward to the novel.

Mike Carey Thanks, Eleanor. Please let us know what you think.

Anna So are they printing a new one each day...
The punishment for the adulterous couple is truly mightmarish. Sounds like your idea Mike!

When I click on hardback at the bottom of the page I come across your page on the Orion publishing group with 'the writers' photo' Interesting framing!! :D

It's so tempting to sign up even though I have a US copy!

Mike Carey The UK version is a little different, Anna, so it might be interesting for you to read both.

I hadn't seen what they'd done with the photo. Puts me in my place... :)

Yes, I think there should be one bit each day this week.

message 5: by Ela (new)

Ela Haha, the family photo was great! :D

message 6: by Mike (new)

Mike Carey There are literally no good photos of me. I have a magical ability to make cameras swerve and defocus.

message 7: by Ela (new)

Ela Well, if you're ever on the run from the law that could be really useful ;)

message 8: by Mike (new)

Mike Carey Yeah, it was.

I mean it would.

Hypothetically.

message 9: by Anna (new)

Anna Of course!
Hey, we saw the book in Waterstones today.

message 10: by Mike (new)

Mike Carey I'm over in the US at the moment, so I actually missed our launch day. Normally the first thing I do when I have a book out is to go to either the Waterstones or the Smiths in Barnet and look for it on the shelves. It's a bit like being present at the birth. :)

Ela Well you should be proud, it was right at the front of Waterstones looking all shiny with the other 'New Releases'

I heard nothing.

Which was wonderful! Picked up the book after your readings on Sunday. Thanks again!

message 14: by Mike (new)

Mike Carey Hi Lindsey. That's great to hear! Let me know what you think...

message 15: by El (new)

El Bought myself the Kindle version - I'm about half way through now and really enjoying it so far!

message 16: by Mike (new)

Mike Carey Some of the best bits are still to come... :)

message 17: by El (new)

El Oooh! Better stop mucking about on t'internet and read some more.

message 18: by Anna (new)

Anna Where have you got to Eleanor?

message 19: by El (new)

El They're just about to leave the caves. Exciting!

Finished up the book last night. Definitely a winner in my 'book'. Very engaging characters, and a truly lovely style to tell such a story.

And made all that much better by hearing your accent when reading it!

Mike Carey Really glad you enjoyed it, Lindsey!

We're currently working on our second collaboration - about two thirds of the way through it, in fact. It's similar to City/Seraglio only in one respect, in that it has lots of digressions and side stories embedded in a larger narrative. We deliver in June, so hopefully that will be released in the first half of 2014. Working title (which won't last): Many Mansions.

message 22: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey Will definitely keep my eyes open for it! But geez... a whole year?! :(

Mike Carey That's what lead times are like in book publishing! Coming in from comics, where the finished art is sometimes sent to the printer on the day it comes in, that was probably the biggest surprise to me. :)
