Pinky and the Brain
“Are you pondering what I’m pondering?”

I was there, sitting in a circle with four of my friends. This type of circle is what I call “The circle of hope.”
I don’t know much about seerah, but the prophet used to apply the same method in spreading Islam. Abu Abdillah al-Arqam bin Abi al-Arqam’s house was used as the center for teaching Fikrah.
Many topics we discussed that night. From explanations on Iman, we moved on to Jihad and contemporary issues.
Then came to a point where Pak Arbi*, the one leading our circle asked all four of us “If someone asked you what is the most cartoon series you missed in your childhood time, what would you answer?”
What is the cartoon that I miss? Sonic the Hedgehog? Animaniacs? Feelix the Cat? Which one? Tons! I practically grew up with Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Marvel Comics, DC Comics and what not.
I don’t know. I think, I missed all of them!
I stated all of the cartoons I missed so did my friends. My friends said other cartoons like cartoons from the Marvel comics; Spiderman, Batman, Ironman and etc. I adore these Marvel cartoons as much as my friends do.
And now I’m beginning to feel confused, why on earth did Pak Arbi ask about the cartoons we missed?!
“That is what you guys missed. But for me, I miss one cartoon which you cannot see on television now. It’s Pinky and the Brain” Pak Arbi said.
I was like huh! From all the cartoons in the world, it’s ‘The Pinky and the Brain’ that he missed?!
I like Pinky and the Brain but I’m not a die-hard fan. It’s not like I don’t prefer watching that, yes I watched it. I enjoyed it. I had a good laugh watching Pinky and Brain as they carried out their mission (I forgot the tagline).
I’ve always adored science-fiction. That’s why I love Marvel’s Spiderman. I’ve always wanted to be the Black Spidey. I’ve dreamed numerous times as Spiderman; wall-crawling, web-slinging and villain-kicking.
I’ve even dreamed of being the Black Spiderman and it the same dream, Peter Parker was my partner as the red Spiderman. Man we made a good team!
I rather die being Peter Parker’s comrade than being zapped by Brain the genius lab rat!
Even now whenever I missed watching them, I would search it on youtube.com, just to remind me of my childhood days. God, I missed being a kid!
But, why on earth does Pak Arbi missed the genius lab rat and his skinny helper? Why Pak Arbi? Why? I want to hear the reason.
“Do you know why? Because of their famous dialogue preceding the theme song.” Pak Arbi began impersonating Pinky and the Brain. “Pinky says: Gee, what are we going to do tonight, Brain? Then Brain would answer: The same thing we do every night Pinky—try to take over the world!”
Yeah! It’s all coming back to me! How could I forget that famous dialogue!
“You know. Even lab rats who struggle each day to go out from their cages have an everlasting strong determination to take over the world. They know they are only lab rats but still they try their best they can do to take over the world” Pak Arbi stopped a while looking at our eyes.
We were all focusing on his lips digesting each and every word he uttered. He continued “What about us? How determined have we tried in spreading Islam to the world?”
“Imagine if you are sitting in a circle with the prophet and the prophet asked ‘What would you do to contribute to Islam?’ “ Pak Arbi gasped.
“Khalid Al-Walid drew his sword and sworn to defend Islam with his genius war tactics, Abdur Rahman Auf gave his wealth for Islam, Ka’ab bin Malik and Abdullah Ibn Rawahah contributed to Islam by being Poets performing poems to motivate the Muslims, Abu Hurairah became the most narrator of the prophet’s hadith, what about us?”
Oh! Face-palm! What have I done to spread Islam to the world? How many hearts have I touched?
How many changes in this world have we made?
Let’s keep on striving. May the blessings of Allah be upon us all.
Cheers.
*Pak Arbi here is not Pak Arbi in the novel “Hero” by Hilal Asyraf. We usually call him as Sir Rosdi Baharom. He is my teacher, xifu, and mentor in during high school. His pen name is Pak Arbi.
