#SixSunday Part 1 #snippet 1a #PhoenicianSeries #Raif's Story #novelines #samplesunday

So since the world did not end this weekend, I'm going to snippet bits and pieces of scenes from Book 1, "Raif's Story" using the #SixSunday hash and http://sixsunday.com/ list of Snippeters :) I'll be signed up on the site @phoenicianbooks and will combine the #SixSunday hashtag on Twitter with the #PhoenicianSeries hash and a link to the current week's snippet. Alas, just as I've signed up, it seems SixSunday is shutting down on January 27, 2013. The Twitter hash should still work though. I'm also cross-hashing on #SampleSunday of course ^)^

Today is Snippet1a - first scene released, first piece. Click here to skip the administrivia explanations and just read the snippet.

Although each scene will be in sequence, the scenes themselves will be done out of order (in regards to how they will eventually appear in the book). Oh, and I'm starting near the end of the book (hah!) Just search the blog tag cloud for SixSunday and/or PhoenicianSeries to find another snippet .

The first six lines of the first scene will be snippet (1a) and have a tag on it "snippet1a" so you can find it again. The following Sunday will be tagged "snippet1b" for the first scene, second six lines, and so forth. Remember, I'm not snippeting the first scene of the book; that's the first scene released.

I'll add a tag to each snippet for where it falls in the sequence of the scene but the scenes are out of order (can't stress this enough because some people just can't seem to grasp it). To find, forex, the third piece of the first scene snippeted, you would search the blog for snippet1c (which hasn't been published as of this writing so that search won't work yet).

If you haven't read any of the books in the series yet, you can get them both from Smashwords. The short story/novella When Minds Collide (#WMC) comes first and the long novel Conditioned Response (#CondResp) comes next. What I'm snippeting, Raif's Story, will fall in between them on the timeline of the series.

Snippet (1a)

Raif had been sitting cross-legged on the cold dirt, silently, not moving, for more than twenty minutes if his internal clock were still counting accurately in the absence of all external stimuli. He was close to giving up but not yet. For a few minutes more, he’d keep himself focused on the flames dancing before his eyes, resist the urge to tap his fingers on his knee and sit as stolidly as the circle of old men around the fire with him in the big tent.

His eyes burned from staring at the fire for so long, so he stretched his neck, tilting his head first to one side, then the other, and letting his eyes wander around the circle to check for reactions. Still, no one moved, let alone spoke in response to his silent show of impatience. He started to seriously wonder if they were even conscious. Maybe they were sleeping with their eyes open. Maybe they were in a trance, meditating on how to kill him. Maybe they were dead and rigor mortis had set in before his arrival.

The oldest of them, seated directly to Raif’s left, made a soft noise of amusement and Raif’s eyes shot sideways to take in the man’s face. The old codger was smirking at him. That settled it. Raif couldn’t take anymore of this.
