Time Travel
“What I really love about music is that it is the closest thing human beings have to time-travel. As we get older, we change. This is a fact. We are not the same person we were at ten, sixteen, twenty, forty or eighty! We are ever changing. Yet, when we hear a song that carries with it an emotion we once experienced, we can be ten or thirty years old again. For three minutes and twenty seconds, we can live in another time and place. We can see our parents, our friends from childhood, the places we’ve lived, werever we’ve traveled, faily gatherings, arguments we had, breakups, makeups, our first love–or our last. Music gives us the ability to reconnect with the person we once were in a way that noghing else can. The emotional memories we attach to music allow us the freedom to be another version of ourselves, a version that changes over time. I;m not saying we were better younger; far from it. But I think the power to reconnect with our youthful selves as mature adults has an interesting learning appeal. If at fifty years old we still behaved, felt and thought as we did in our teens or twenties our daily lives would be chaos! The memories and emotions that music brings out in us are a chance to really see our growth. ” Marilu Henner, Total Memory Makeover
