Character Interview: Alex Albrinck & Porthos from “A Question of Will”

Today’s guests are Alex Albrinck and Porthos, from Albrinck’s A Question of Will. Welcome!

* * *

Mia: What is the name of the book where we’ll find you? Can you tell us a little about it?

Porthos: The book is called A Question of Will. Basically, it’s the story of a criminal named Will Stark who keeps getting away with breaking laws he’s sworn to uphold. Of course, everybody thinks the guy is some kind of hero because we beat him up and burned down his house and he just keeps on fighting anyway. Some people just don’t know when to quit.

Mia: Tell us a little about yourself. Where do you fit into the story? What should we know about you?

Porthos: I am one of three people called Hunters, along with my friends Athos and Aramis. Yes, we’re named after the Three Musketeers…I couldn’t put that classic down, and we changed our names because of it. I took the name Porthos, because he’s my favorite. Our job is to hunt down criminals, subdue them, and bring them back to prison. This is easier said than done, because some of the people we’re sent to collect will do things like turn invisible or teleport away. Criminals are always difficult like that, you know? But we always get our man; we’ve got some specialized skills that counteract what the difficult types try. Well, I should say that we almost always get our man. That Will Stark guy…don’t get me started on him. He just always seems one step ahead of us, even when he’s outnumbered.

Mia: What do you think of the author? Be honest. We won’t tell.

Porthos: He’s seriously in violation of Aliomenti Oath #2, and when I told Aramis about the book he fainted in horror. We’ll eventually track the author down, because he’s due for twenty years in our top security prison, but we need to find Stark first. If the author starts flashing any type of Energy skills…well, I’ll know right away. And then we’ll get him. While he’s in prison, I think we’ll make him rewrite the book showing Stark to be the criminal he is, and how one of the Hunters in particular is exceptionally dashing. I may let him include my teammates a bit, just so everyone knows who does the real work around here.

Mia: How do you feel about the story you’re in?

Porthos: The author is seriously deluded in treating the greatest criminal in our history as some kind of hero; he’s exposing our group to the world; and my team looks thoroughly incompetent despite our near-perfect track record. But hey, other than that, great read, highly recommended, lots of twists and turns, tell your friends, and don’t forget to tip your waitress. Oh wait…she violated Oath #2 as well, so she’s no longer with us. Oops, my bad.

Mia: Do you like being a character in the book?

Porthos: It pays the bills, you know? Of course, I shouldn’t be a minor character in any book, but apparently certain humans can’t be bothered to handle that trifling detail.

Mia: How do you see your future? Without giving anything away about the story, naturally.

Porthos: Well, I think The Leader just gave the all clear to go to war on Stark and his criminal underground, since the whole “subdue and capture” thing doesn’t seem to work on Stark. When that happens, I should have a starring role. I’ll probably be the one to take out Stark, which I’ll accomplish with great flair. I can’t wait; that guy’s been a thorn in my side for years.

Mia: What do you know about your author’s plans? Can we expect to see you in any future stories?

Porthos: How could he leave me out of the stories for long? I mean, the chapters in this book where I’m not present are so dull and boring, right? Tell me I’m not the only one skipping to the chapters that feature me. I hear he’s going to write more stuff about Stark and his backstory first, though. I’ll show up at some point, because eventually he’ll have to show Stark’s criminal nature, and I’ll be right there. You watch. Maybe Stark won’t get away this time. Maybe we can change history. Thinking positive here…

Mia: Let’s say they make a movie about this book. Who do you want to play you, and why?

Porthos: If you ask me personally, I’d say pick somebody that looks good in a cloak, which only adds to my allure…I mean, it’s good casting for my part in the movie. Do you think the guy who played the Ranger/King in Lord of the Rings is free? He’d be pretty solid, but he’s not quite as good looking as me. The other way to do this would be pretty simple. Interview one hundred women. Ask them who the hottest actor alive is. That’s the guy to play me. If the women are on the good-looking side, I’ll be happy to do the interviews myself. Just don’t tell them who I work for, because otherwise I’d have to kill you, and them too. Don’t take it personally, though. Just following the rules.
