Hardware Upgrade Or, I'm Getting a New Toy!

For the past six years, I've used a lovely little Mac iBook G4. It's my first laptop, and I've been very happy with it. I've written several books on it, dragged it all over the place ... it's been a good pal.

Slowly but surely, though, software upgrades ceased to be available for some of the items I use regularly, and the latest peripherals (like my iPhone and my Kobo reader) don't talk to the processor. I've been getting pop-ups that say plug-ins are no longer supported.

Well, it's time. Today I ordered a new MacBook Air ... and even arranged for high-speed DSL. My ISP doesn't offer anything faster in my area, and I've actually been on dial-up (can you believe it!) for years now as a result. I'm looking forward to faster access and a new computer. Of course, once it arrives at our local Apple store, I'll be off-line for a couple of days while the guys at the Genius Bar transfer my files over to the new device.

Nevertheless, I'm excited. This is going to be a big upgrade.

I'll also be looking for a new home for the little iBook. My iMac G3 is still plugging away at a non-profit. For all I know, my first Mac (a ProForma) is still working somewhere. In my experience, the Macs last forever even if the software/processor is overcome by new technology.
