Nothing Remarkable

What do we want to achieve when we create something artistic? I'm just starting to write a new novel and I have a vision of where I want it to go, who I want to market it to, and a desperate hope that I might actually make some money from it. But apart from all that, what I really want is to do justice to the original idea. The idea is key: it's the portal to creativity. And if I finish the novel - and even sell it - without having satisfied myself that I've done the best that I can, then I w...

Jay Eales Sorry to have to agree about Totem and Taboo, as I was one of the people who helped to fund it, so I was hoping for a classic. You're kinder to the Stranglers post-Cornwell period than I would be, though...

Andrew Hi Jay

Only just seen this comment. Interesting that you assisted in funding the album! I had a long car journey last week and played Guilty, Hi-Fi, Beyond Elysium Fields, and Totem and Taboo one after the other. I preferred Guilty.

I was less keen on The Stranglers whilst Paul Roberts was singing - although I did like In The Night as I said. For me, Suite XVI is one of the albums I still play repeatedly, but the new one - Giants - failed to grab me much at all and I'm loathe to return to it...

Jay Eales I think Hugh looked at things like Kickstarter and saw an opportunity to avoid the fun and games of dealing with labels and make use of his loyal fanbase. It seems a reasonable way of funding an album for those with some sort of profile. More money for the musician and the fans get all kinds of benefits from video diaries to signed goodies, plus a signed copy of the CD at least a month before the official version came out.

My favourite Cornwell solo albums are still Wired and Guilty, though.

I wasn't a fan of Paul Roberts either. The only post-Cornwell Stranglers album I've any time for is Norfolk Coast. The first couple put me off buying any more for years. To the point that I don't think I even knew they'd done Suite XVI. Must get hold and give it a listen.

Andrew Must admit I missed out on any pre-album stuff and didn't know T&T was out til after the event. Hadn't realised it was fan-funded, although it does seem like a good idea in principle.

Suite XVI is a pretty good album - certainly better than all the Roberts stuff. Be interesting to see what you think. The final track, Relentless, is one of my favourites.
