Self-publishing has been around for decades. I remember as a graduate student at California State University, Northridge, the humble beginnings of XLibris and other digital printers promising to bring your words to print. I played around with some of them although, at the time, the Vanity presses were still in full-swing, giving budding authors like myself the opportunity to publish when mainstream houses were swamped with submissions.
