Thank you, Maria. Your article answers some of the questions I had, and I've already started "Coincidences" so your giveaway worked with me:)

Thank you, Kyra :) I thought it would be useful to post something like this as I was unsure whether KDP Select was worth doing, and something like this would have been helpful for me. Good luck with your promo, and you must let me know when your promotion is on! Thanks for downloading Coincidences. I hope you enjoy the story!

I'm happy that I've answered some of your questions. Feel free to ask me any other questions; I might be able to help.
Thanks for the tips, Maria. I did mine and it was ok, but not nearly as successful as yours. I didn't know about the promo sites until much too late to do anything about it. If I do another, I will definitely use the resources that you mentioned... I'm just not sure I'm doing another at this point. We'll see. Thanks for sharing. *waves*

Some great advice, Maria. KDP is good for promotion, especially if there's no money in the pot for such things. But I do wonder if it marks books as 'free, therefore not good'? Personally, I've enjoyed most of the Indie books I've downloaded (both free and not) and most of my reading comes from this source. They are so varied and different, so unlike most of the traditional stuff. Though I don't have time to read much else now with reading /reviewing for so many other independent authors. I've managed to find a few more 'promotion' sites for the freebies and hope it'll help next time.
I'd love to have a decent amount of sales, but... and yes, all my books are low prices. I think reviews are the key - getting them is the difficulty.
I did enjoy Coincidences and am glad the 'freebie' was a success - here's to reviews!!! :)

It seems to have worked out well for me this time, so it might be worth you giving it another go. In the last couple of days, I've kept the price low, to keep momentum going and the book is in the charts, so it seems to be working for now. I have also noticed I have some lends from the Kindle lending library, which I didn't have before this last promotion.

Personally, I've e..."I agree with you, Julie, the hardest part of all is getting the reviews, mainly because we need to educate readers about the importance of reviews. When I was a reader rather than a writer, I never reviewed books, and I was reading lots of books. I just never realised that reviews are so important. I've added a last page to Coincidences asking readers to review the book on Amazon if they've enjoyed it. Hopefully that will help me get some reviews.
Thank you, Maria, for sharing your wisdom. At least, I won't be going in there "blind" if I decide to do the KDP Select thing. I appreciate all your advice!Love,
Sylvia
Glad to be of help, Sylvia :) I hope it works out for you. I've seen a definite boost in sales from this promo.
Thanks for the insight. My book is free right now and so far I'm only in the low twenties for free sales. But it's still going on for another two days so I hope that it helps! Thanks for sharing.http://www.amazon.com/Two-Pair-Quadru...
I'm not seeing how you find where you rank in a certain category, like Top Free Young Adult, for example.
Hi Ettie. The ranking shows up in the 'Product Description' area of the book's page on Amazon. Just look at the sales rank, and if your book is in any of the bestselling lists, it will show the details there.
Thanks. I did know to normally look there for it, but since I placed it on a free promotion testerday, those ranking numbers disappeared.http://www.amazon.com/Help-Your-Grown...

P.S I downloaded your book and it is next on my reading list! ;)
