Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier frightened the life out of me when I read it from my parents ' bookshelf at a young age. Loved it though! For sheer humour and whimsy I love Apple of my Eye, a sort of walking guide to New York by Helene Hanff. Have reviewed both these books on my website at http://www.paulineconolly.com
I was a huge Daphne du Maurier fan growing up. "Rebecca, Kiss Me Again Stranger, My Cousin Rachel" ... I read them all. I still remember a sleep over party when we read her original story The Birds and scared the living day lights out of ourselves. So much scarier than the Hitchcock film inspired by her story! Thanks for reminding me about Jamaica Inn. I haven't thought about that one in years.

Thanks. I'll check it out.
Candy, I had forgotten about The Birds. My older sister told me the story late one night after she had seen the movie and the experience is still vivid! Other books which have had a huge influence on me (and my writing) are The Grapes Of Wrath and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
So many of the stories my dad read out loud and the books I read when I was really young simply stuck to me. I guess it's natural. Little kids are like sponges that way.

Thanks for that Candy...what a great piece! Hope Rebecca ends up being a box-office success after all the difficulties!

Thanks for starting this discussion Candy! While I'm here I'm going to make a quick plug for The Books Authors Read and tell everyone that new author Carrie Rubin is now on the blog and sharing her favourite books.Mind if I ask a question? Would the readers who've made comments here about their own favourite books like to have their say on The Books Authors Read? Maybe a page called Your Say. I'd really appreciate the feedback.
cheers
