Let’s Hear it for Routine!

Carly Icon

I discovered something about myself this past summer. I’m a creature of habit. Routine. And when that is all thrown off, I don’t function well … almost not at all. I wasn’t myself and you all heard me complaining about the driver’s ed class my daughter had to be at by 7 AM; and how I barely got any work done the second half of the summer. Yesterday she went back to school … and everything in my life clicked back into place. Honestly it was like a loud CLICK sounded and everything wrong became right again. I woke up and she got ready, I fed the dogs, gave her breakfast, sat with her till she went out for the bus. I went downstairs on the treadmill, came up, showered and sat down in my office at 9 AM ready to write and sprint with people on Twitter. I wrote for an hour and a half solid, and really accomplished something. Today I took an exercise day off, but I did write (discovered that it’s harder to lengthen a story than I thought it would be), and then went on to do errands and things. Tomorrow I’m back to the exercise and write routine. As you can tell, this makes me very happy. Very very happy!

How about you? Are you a creature of habit? Do you thrive on routine? Or prefer change and surprises?

Tricia Douglas I totally agree with your thoughts on routine and scheduling. When I was teacher putting in my thirty years with 8 year olds, we all lived on a specific schedule. This allowed, not only myself, but the children to focus on one thing at a time and complete their tasks every hour of each day. I think my need for this routine was passed on to me by my parents who also were schedule phobics. I grew up knowing what each day would require and what had to be accomplished. So some of us are born with this need. I just had a knee replacement and was in bed for a couple of weeks. This drove me crazy not being able to accomplish my needed daily tasks. Now that I'm back on my feet, literally, I am much happier knowing that I can complete my daily routines without something or someone interfering with what makes me feel good! Yeah for schedules and routines.

Marijayne Stegman I'm with you completely on routine. My 12-year old went back to school last week. Yesterday there was tons going on but I cooked dinner and got lots of other things done. He's completely self-sufficient when he's at home which he was for the last month of the summer but somehow it throws me off. Kinda like Fridays when my husband doesn't work (he works a 4-10 schedule every week). Just knowing he's in the house throws me off. I'm trying to get the exercise part of the routine worked back in.
