Write to Pub Wednesday: Too busy to write? Roll with it for inspiration.

Do you ever feel that there isn’t enough time in the day to write and tend to all of the people and responsibilities in your life?  Granted family comes first, and your friends do need your attention, but perhaps you procrastinate over writing because going out to the club with your pals is calling to you louder than your manuscript. Maybe your plot is off, like the holes I found in my plot this week and had to force myself to do more research to repair. Should we, as writers become shut ins and remove ourselves from family, friends, and other activities in order to get back to the keys?

I had a lot to balance this week, and a ton of writing to accomplish. Amazingly, I managed to complete quite a bit of scribbling, and include people, chores and activities between writing sessions. What I found today, this busiest of days, was that the activities I was engaged in from research to meetings, preparing dinner, taking care of family, and visiting with friends added content to my writing.  As the hot afternoon smouldered into a warm evening and finally became a welcome cool night, I found it also continued to creep into my manuscripts.

Don’t get me wrong; I am a firm believer that some days and weeks you need to schedule time away from friends. There comes a day to let the family know they are the most important beings in your life, but you are still penciling in some time to focus on writing and have a few precious ours alone with your thoughts and a keyboard. But for me this week, and especially today wasn’t that time, it was more of a juggling act.

Instead of fighting the loved ones and the business of your life, try today’s successful experiment. Roll with it and include everyone. Note the conversations, smell the laundry, cook the sauce, and feed small portions into your manuscript as the day moves into evening. The results may surprise you by enriching your writing, just as all of it enriches your life.

Cheers!
