I'm Not Crazy! I'm Just a Writer... (Giveaway!)

I don't talk to myself. Really, I don't.

I just sometimes talk to my characters out loud. But I'm not crazy! I swear. I'm just a writer with an overactive imagination.

You know, I never intended Daniel Webb - the main character in my One Powerful Addiction series - to be any kind of a big deal. He was a one-night stand kinda character. I wrote him into a short story (which ended up landing me in the semi-finals in the 2011 Just One Bite contest over at ARe) and then tossed him to the side. His story was done. I'd gotten all I wanted out of Daniel Webb.

Until he started harassing me. Yes. Look, I understand he's a fictional character, but anyone who's ever written anything knows what I'm talking about. That creative itch you just can't shake when you have a story nagging at you. And this story was Daniel's. Apparently, he'd decided I wasn't through with him.

It was a day like any other day. I was driving down the road to the book/DVD/CD/game store on the other side of town when I got caught at a red light (as in a traffic light, not a naughty district). And that's when Daniel pounced.

"Hey, what if Sarelia (that psycho elder spirit bitch from the Lower World, in case you'd forgotten) came back to stir up some new fresh Hell in Stone Hills?"

I pursed my lips and glared at the red light, willing it to turn green. "Nah ... I don't have time to pick up another story right now."

"But ... but ..."

I sighed. "No buts, Daniel. What the fuck would this story be about? Huh? Sarelia coming back to stir up fresh shit? Why? What's her motive?"

"I don't know!" Daniel cried in my head. "Isn't that your job? Coming up with all the answers? I'm just the eye candy over here."

"No one can see you. You're text on a piece of paper."

"What the fuck ever. Everyone knows I'm sexy anyway."

I rolled my eyes. Damn, this was a long red light. I turned my glaring gaze to the steady stream of traffic cutting across the road in front of me. Damn them and their green light.

"You know you want to," Daniel whispered in my head, snapping me out of my pre-road rage state.

"Want to what?" Ram that jackass with the political bumper sticker in front of me? Hell yeah.

"Write me another damn story!"

Oh. That. "Not really."

"Liar!"

"Figment of my imagination!"

Daniel sputtered to an awkward silence. Unfortunately, it didn't last long. "What ... what the fuck? Little below the belt, don't you think?"

"Yeah, well, whatever. Truth hurts."

Fast forward to today and I have six novellas contracted all for Daniel. And the first one is already out!

So, what's the moral to this story?

Isn't it obvious? Always run through red lights. Because being stuck at one is bad for your sanity.

(Just kidding ... yeah ... )

Blurb:

Daniel Webb is your fairly average twenty-something year-old living in the bustling city of Stone Hills, Arkansas. High school graduate, College dropout, and currently an employee of a local coffee shop, where he spends the majority of his nights hovering over a hot grill. You know, a totally glamorous lifestyle...

Oh, yeah, and Sarelia, an elder spirit of the Lower World, gifted him with powers beyond his wildest imaginings only a few months ago. Some people would have been grateful. Others would have simply been in denial.

All Daniel feels is resentment.

Because honestly, Daniel's life is kinda sucking at the moment. His girlfriend Malorie dumped him. He's crashing on his brother, Mark's couch (who's being a bit of a dick about the whole thing), and his best friend, James Harin, won't stop smothering him with pity.

But when Daniel bumps into the sexy Alyssa Vega at The Pub and ends up going home with her for some no-strings-attached fun, something finally seems to be going right. Alyssa is just the spot of normalcy Daniel needs in his freak show of a life.

Until his sexy one night stand turns out to be a freak just like him. A rather badass freak as a matter of fact.

So much for normalcy.

As the temptation to use the power Sarelia gave him grows stronger, Daniel finally gives in and embraces the strength the power gives him. With it, he can do anything.

Well, except raise the dead.

Too bad the power's so damn addicting.
