Listen to Your Heart
I've felt an affinity towards Switzerland throughout my life. I have lived in the USA my whole life. One day, at my aunt's funeral, a man approached, tapping me on the shoulder, and said to me, "You're Swiss," and he walked away! I followed him across the room, only to learn he was my mother's cousin, had completed a great deal of my maternal genealogy, and gave me enough info to start my own exciting journey.
My 2nd great grandfather and his family emigrated from Switzerland in 1866 and settled in Minnesota. John Kerker was an adventurer, musician, educator, superintendent, entrepreneur, editor and endlessly ambitious. He, his wife, and 7 children made the voyage across the ocean on a ship called the Saxonia.
I was so enthralled by their story (through my research), that I wrote my first novel (historical fiction).

About their youngest, Rosa, as she struggled to find meaning in her life and overcame many obstacles to chose her true calling an live a life without regret.
I love Switzerland, and visited there in 2009. The Kerker clan hailed from St. Gallen, and many times I've considered learning German and return to this wonderful country. It felt like home to me in 2009.
The Kerker family were devout Catholics. In my novel, I show the readers what life was like in 1866, the harsh winters, pandemics, women suffragists in America, death, and how suicide was stigmatized by the Catholic church. Filled with authentic pictures, documents and newspaper articles at the end of each chapter.
