Incandescence
We enter the world and mind of Mila Chowdhury as she opens up a leather bound diary that belonged to her grandmother and as she reads it something powerful happens as a powerful wind changes her mindset and decides to read her story in the sky. Conflicted with different emotions she sits amongst many in a cafe as she reflects on her inner self and her emotional unmarked boundaries of the soul.
Sensing her own lack of inner peace Mila describes herself and emotions in a unique and powerful voice. How do you accept not being the choice of the man you hoped you’d get?
Emotional connections described like an apple tree burdened with fruit. As you read page 14 paragraph 2 the author takes Mila into reflecting how Papri won the man she wanted and using her anger dug deeper into her trench where she sleeps as the author describes how this trench plays an integral part as optimum and hope pale and replaced the drought of the soul.
We then learn about Rahim
and weaves her life and her definition of love and as stated she’s like an unfinished poem that needs you to decide the ending. The scenery and the history behind the culture and the struggles she and the other characters face are incorporating positive ,negative ways of dealing with love, loss and sorrow within herself and others. Then reflecting on him as she tries to not keep her gaze on him but we hear her thoughts about Papri and how he was chosen for her and yet she could have anyone as she’s described on page 17.
Papri enters now in this first chapter Cafe and we get to understand her ways of dealing with the world and finding solace and being an orphan growing up in her sisters home and not treated that great yet ok. Pretty and noticed she loved to go under the bamboo bush. As the author gets us deep into her sadness, her schooling and why the bush meant so much to her as it listened as if it was a counsellor. Read page 19 and join her as we hear her thoughts about how this bush lightened her heart, accepted her and connected her in different ways. Emotional healing and distance are at the best of this powerful novel as specific emotions like fear and joy we realized from the start within Mila and Papri to life changes and events that often control more than their lives. Each hoping for a different kind of outcome and yet ad you get deeper in Mila and Rahim the man she galls for and conflicting thoughts come into mind as to who gets him and why not Mila?
Then you get the underlying messages and see how Mila and Rahim connect.
Ashik and Prema in an affair , plus learning about her grandparents and tradition. The House of Chowdhury is inhabited by one of the most influential families of Bangladesh. Prema and Ashik and their desires are described and Lutfun Azhar and how she made Sheri Chowdhury fall for her. How can all this be compared to a fable which has endings that are opened? Enter a rare glimpse into as decide natural order or things.
The focus is on relationships that care forbidden .
As we leave the Lake chapter and go to Interlude we learn just how far forbidden love will go to be together. Mila and Rahim, Prema and Ashik have no will power and events gets more complicated as Sheri and Luftun
are allowed to be closer but will they elope or marry with family? Plus God took a shine to the oppressed and retribution descended in full fury. It compromised the fate of the Zamindars from the House of Chowdhury.
Prema and Ashik disowned and forced to leave but where? Customs and traditions must never be changed and now Mila welcomed Premarital but what about her mother? Mila knew the outcomes of betrayal and would not betray her mother or uncles. Tradition about marriage and second wives explained in Islam and the relationship between Shari and Lutfun explained. But where will they begin their lives?
Southbound focuses on Ashik and Prema and where they go and how they started a new life in the precinct mosque. Prema has a child and the fate of healthy children poor. Plus Raiza was getting married according to tradition. Page 57 you join the wedding. Tradition and more different and yet interesting. Where did they go and why?
Pages 58-73 lets you know about Raiza and how she is as we see the journey, how Mirza fared and whisked away by his men. Raiza fashion conscious and we see her page 67 deciding on jewelry and more.
Then we get into more marriages and one that was told to go back to those who sold her to him. Odd traditions and we move to the next chapter Bibi wife followed by Awakening. It gets more controversial as we learn about many of the marriages and failures plus the kidnapping of Boro Didi and the revolution that one of the Chowdhurry joined the revolution and who has to leave and why? Plus where Mila and Luftun and Shreya and are going to be attacked and time to leave. Page 131 tells what they all did . Family cars on riverbank as the author takes them on the boats but what’s enchanting are the orchard smells and birds and nightingale shrieked horror and more. Just who survived the river and what’s next?
The chapter Love takes us through different ways of getting married plus who adhered to tradition and deaths, and survival plus Mila what was her role in helping one that was hurt?
Crafted to teach readers about customs, lies , betrayals and arranged marriages and a revolution that challenged them all and tore apart the Chadhurry family. At the end of the chapter titled memory Mila reflects on the pictures and family history as the revisits to Mrs.Chowdhury drained her and her thoughts bright back even more. The Roof bonds Mila to Prema and Luftun disappeared and Mila waited but watched the Hashem couple next door why? Then reflecting on Prema and Ashik and her children. The rest of the chapter reflects on Rahim and definition of happiness or a loveless life of doom. Read the rest of Roof and her conclusion. Silence is powerful as we learn about Mr. and Mrs Chowdhury and the end of the chapter changes their dynamics and will he leave?
Mrs. Chowdhury runs the family and this chapter encompasses many Mid’s and relationships defined in her mind. Change is quite compelling as you’ll see why when you get to know Ekram . The meeting tells how Mila takes a shine to a man and a heartfelt meeting will she see him again? Wait until you hear what he did to meet her and pages 203-and an amazing relationship begins. Wait until you read proposal serious unique, filled with comedy and love. Peacock- dance read that yourself wedding, preparation and Prema and Mila and her father. Homecoming incorporated relationships and the last line page 253 says it all. The next chapters read for yourself and learn about Mila and Irfaan and Chilies, neighbor and Prema and her ex living too close. He remarried and then Canary the violence, leaving a husband who beat his wife and Shimul in pain then hoping she’s okay and chapter Black Tongue that hoping Shimul finds another and why is she a burden who offers to take her? Hope yet tragically unhappy for Shimul.
The title chapter Incandescent takes us into what happens to all the characters and will they as the title means: the emission of light as a result of being heated as you reflect on some of the characters: passion, excitement and inspiration. A powerful ending Pages 395-405 leaves you wanting more and wondering where each character and children wind up. Complex, flaws with each character and relationship which makes it more realistic, author Mehreen Ahmed created a powerful true to life narrative and story that’s not far from real life even though there customs are dicier the same.
