This was, by far, one of the most marvelous and suspenseful mysteries I have read in a long time. Memorable characters, plenty of twists and turns, a surprising ending. Is there going to be another book in this series? If so, I can't wait!

Private Investigator Zachary Goldman’s life isn’t all roses, but he tries to put his own shattered life behind him to investigate the death of five-year-old Declan Bond.

Declan’s death has been ruled an accident, but his grandmother thinks there is more to it. She fears Declan’s mother will not be able to find peace until Zachary can give them an answer once and for all. But as Zachary digs into the circumstances surrounding Declan’s death, he finds that all is not as it seems, and somebody doesn’t want him to find the truth.

Psychologically complex and gripping … Zachary must deal with his own psychological issues as well as those of the child’s parents along with attempts on his life. I’m binge reading this series.

Zachary Goldman, Private Investigator, is flawed with a capital F. Shattered by the tragedies of his own life, he will somehow still manage to pick himself up and dig just a little bit deeper than anyone else to find the vital clues.

The inspirations for She Wore Mourning came from a lot of different places.

The idea for the title and all of the mourning jewelry worn by Isabella came from a dream about a woman who wore everything she could that had come from her deceased child, including wearing his baby teeth as pearls. A mother literally wearing her child to mourn his loss. This macabre yet poignant image stayed with me for a long time. Modern memorial jewelry is, thankfully, more tasteful than a string of baby teeth.

2. The hoarder and neat freak being married and trying to establish rules of engagement that would allow them to survive living together despite their opposite natures was an extension of personal/family experience.

3. Zachary Goldman is a deeply flawed but fundamentally good person who has experienced significant tragedy in his own life. Zachary’s background, including the Christmas Eve fire and the circumstances surrounding it, drew on the experience of a friend. I wanted to explore how personal trauma and psychological struggles made Zachary empathetic, an out-of-the-box thinker, and someone who didn’t give up easily. A unique profile for a private investigator.
