James Gunn Reportedly Eyeing 2 ‘Superman’ Spinoffs for Standout Characters

While the James Gunn-directed Superman is just officially hitting theaters on Friday, July 11, the early returns from critics and fans have apparently ignited some significant potential future plans.

Following a run of early screenings, feedback about the newest superhero movie, and specifically, Superman himself, David Corenswet, began to roll in.

The majority of viewers raved about Corenswet's performance and left the theater with numerous positive comments about Superman. Although it's still early, the reviews on social media have echoed those from the likes of Rotten Tomatoes, which has a critic score of 82 percent currently and an exceptional 95 percent score on the fan-focused Popcornmeter.

Gunn, who's also the co-CEO of DC Studios, had already been planning for what's next, announcing that a new Wonder Woman film and The Batman Part II are both in development.

However, according to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, Superman could be followed by two potential spinoffs down the line.

"Gunn is considering TV spinoffs for characters like Mister Terrific and cub reporter Jimmy Olsen, a knowledgeable person said," WSJ's Ben Fritz wrote.

Skyler Gisondo plays Jimmy Olsen, while Edi Gathegi takes on the role of Mister Terrific in Superman.

If either potential spinoff comes to fruition, it'd be an interesting and enjoyable move by Gunn and DC. While this approach hasn't been incredibly common, the Superman director's comments in recent months prove that he has an open mind about new projects and storylines that differ from the norm.

Superman has all the makings of a home run, so it's safe to assume that fans can also expect to see Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor) and the rest of the cast more in the future.

And from the sound of it, there's a decent chance we'll see additional films expanding on this franchise as well.
