James Gunn’s Blunt 'Superman' Directing Style Shook David Corenswet. And He Loved It
James Gunn has showcased his unique approach and mindset in virtually every aspect of the movie industry. His comments during press appearances ahead of the release of Superman, paired with what members of the cast say about him, have proven that.
No one learned more about Gunn's unique directing style, though, than Superman himself, Dave Corenswet.
The newest Man of Steel has given Gunn high praise several times, especially recently, while squarely in the public eye. However, what Corenswet said recently about the director and co-CEO of DC Studios is the most noteworthy statement yet.
It's also extremely telling as we watch Superman earn praise from critics and fans alike. The rapport between Corenswet and Gunn appears to have had a significant impact on the movie, leading some to believe that Superman could prove to be one of the best superhero films in a long time.

During a recent interview with GQ, Corenswet detailed how different Gunn's directing style is. He also admitted to "desperately" needing the unique approach, which included Gunn not "beating around the bush" while on set.
"I think in a lot of ways, James and I are made for each other,” Corenswet says. "James has this habit of, as you’re working on the scene, he’ll sit back by the monitors on the God mic and he’ll yell directions at you, which is not how directors generally work. You usually do the scene, they say cut, and then they come and say very privately and quietly, 'I loved that moment where you did this. What if we tried something else in the next one?'"
Corenswet admitted that Gunn's style of directing was not only different but also likely a curveball for many others in the industry.
"That is something that would throw lots of actors off, and understandably so. For me, the second that happened, I went, okay, this is going to be great because I have no idea what I’m doing. I desperately need a director," Corenswet continued.
"I need a director who knows what they want and is willing to say it out loud without too much politeness and without beating around the bush. If I’m no good, tell me I’m no good, and then let’s work together to make me good."
From the sound of it, Corenswet and Gunn are a match made in movie heaven. The approach that best fit both sides was precisely what the other needed, which is rare to find even beyond the big screen.
After months of anticipation and excitement from fans, Corenswet's Superman debut has finally arrived. Fortunately, based on the early returns, it seems to be living up to the hype, as the movie boasts a stellar 96 percent fan rating on Rotten Tomatoes in the early going.
