Waffle House Is Making a Big Change Impacting Its Most Popular Menu Item
Not every change is bad, and a big change announced by Waffle House on July 1 should please customers.
Waffle House had slapped a surcharge on its most popular menu item. Eggs. The surcharge was 50 cents.
However, now the chain has announced it's removing it, which means costs should go down for customers who order egg dishes.
"Egg-cellent news…the egg surcharge is officially off the menu. Thanks for understanding!" Waffle House wrote on X on July 1. The post has had more than 2 million views.
The chain's website says eggs are its most popular food item ever.
The chain's website says it has sold 4,768,980,537 eggs since launching in 1955. That's at the top of the list. Hashbrowns are second, and waffles are third.
That's a lot of eggs in a lot of restaurants; there are more than 2,000 Waffle House restaurants in the U.S., according to CNN.
In order, bacon strips, grits, and cups of coffee are next in line.
A person wrote on the Waffle House X page comment thread, "Awesome! Now add pancakes to the menu please." But Waffle House retorted, "Respectfully no."

According to CNN, egg prices "fell 12.7 percent in April." On June 26, the USDA wrote that "wholesale egg prices have now dropped 64 percent, with retail prices falling 27 percent from their peak earlier this year."
In February, Denny's joined Waffle House in implementing an egg surcharge.
"While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived we cannot predict how long this shortage will last," Waffle House said when it announced the egg surcharge, according to Good Morning America. "We are continuously monitoring egg prices and will adjust or remove the surcharge as market conditions allow."
According to the Hill, rising egg prices were in part due to an "avian flu outbreak, which contaminated eggs and forced the U.S. to import more of the food product."
