(May 20, 2025) - Today, Stereolab share “Transmuted Matter”, the final single ahead of the release of the group’s first album in 15 years - Instant Holograms On Metal Film, this Friday. The album was announced 15 years to the day after Stereolab announced they were going on hiatus back in 2010.

Speaking on the album’s creation, Tim Gane says: “The idea to record a new LP came into focus around spring/summer 2023 and we started recording in January 2024. There were no rehearsals, as usual. We started again from scratch. “Always a beginner” is my attitude to things, just feeling my way through. Music is just an exciting adventure and I don’t have any trepidation about doing it or presenting it to others. What comes out comes out.” Laetitia Sadier adds: “I see everything as a continuum with no determined sections, that bears no relation to what has come before or will come after. In the case of Stereolab, Tim is primary composer. On this LP, I did, however, have much more musical input than before. And indeed I had had some practice through developing my own music over the past years, which surely nourished the sound and general configuration.”

To celebrate the album’s release, Stereolab will be holding listening events at select retailers around the world on release day, with a limited number of value-add exclusives available at each, comprised of:

1 - A Button/Pin/Badge featuring art based on the cover of Instant Holograms On Metal Film

2 - A two-sided print with Instant Holograms On Metal Film / Catalog titles on the back.

3 - A Stereolab logo sticker.

Instant Holograms On Metal Film is co-released by the band’s own label Duophonic UHF Disks, and Warp Records. Featuring thirteen songs written by Laetitia Sadier and Tim Gane; performed by Laetitia, Tim, Andy Ramsay, Joe Watson and Xavi Muñoz, who comprise the current touring line-up of the band and guest contributions by Cooper Crain and Rob Frye (Bitchin Bajas), Ben LaMar Gay (International Anthem), Ric Elsworth, Holger Zapf (Cavern Of Anti-Matter), Marie Merlet and Molly Hansen Read.

On working with Cooper Crain, Tim comments: “I’m a big fan of Bitchin’ Bajas and we had toured with then in the US in 2019 so got to know them well. When we decided to make a new record, he was the only person I had in mind and luckily he could do it. Just like (previous collaborators) John McEntire and Jim O’Rourke, he is an inventive musician as well as a great engineer/producer, and that’s what we like.”

In terms of the subject matter, lyric writer Laetitia summarises: “As the world falls apart, whether we are aware of it or not, we are already planting the seeds of what will come next. I think it is important to keep in sight what powerful creators we are, and how there is power available to us at this stage to choose what outcome we would like to see for this yet undefined future. The words seek to expose that this is what we do: we create. Our imagination is here to serve that purpose, and is the power we have to choose whatever it is we want to see come about. Some privileged people do not like the idea of sharing this power with the people at large.”

Ahead of the album’s official announcement, some fans of the band received a package stamped “unsolicited Stereolab material”. Inside was a 7” single containing “Aerial Troubles” on one side, an instrumental version on the flip, with a cryptic wordsearch insert. At the same time, posters with the band’s name appeared in a number of major cities with the same word grid printed on. Several attempts had been made to solve the wordsearch, with much online speculation about how the words go together, and whether the single did indeed contain new music, or something uncovered from the band’s archives.

And in lieu of a description of the music, the band are inviting fans, detractors, and journalists alike to provide their own adjectives on a fill-in-the-blanks sheet.

Instant Holograms On Metal Film Wordsearch

Alongside “Melodie Is A Wound”, the group released a cryptic crossword puzzle compiled by Alan Connor, who works as the crossword editor for The Guardian and sets the cryptic crossword for The Observer, has been question editor for TV shows House Of Games and Only Connect, and is the author of books including 188 Words For Rain. Alan is also a fan of Stereolab:

“Writing this puzzle I felt an unfamiliar sensation, at first in my knees. A recovered memory of Stereolab in a venue which sent the groop's noise bursts - bass? sub-bass? whatever might be under that? - directly inside each of us in the crowd, reshaping us in wonderful ways. No one else has done that, but then no one else has done the alchemic things Stereolab has done. Happily for me, this is a band fond of titles which read just like fragments of cryptic clues. So long, that is, as your brain has been suitably warped by puzzles. Happily, mine has been warped this way - as well as my body by Stereolab. Thank you for the warping, thank you Warp and thank you Stereolab.  By the way, I sincerely believe that anyone in public life would do public life better if they listened to Emperor Tomato Ketchup's “Tomorrow Is Already Here” a few times. What was then the future has borne out that one plenty.

The album art was first slowly revealed on the Lab Report sign-up page of the band’s website, with different layers gradually appearing. The 7” started landing with people on 2nd April 2025, sixteen years to the day after the group announced they were going on indefinite hiatus. In 2019, the band released expanded and remastered editions of seven of their studio albums, coinciding with Stereolab playing live for the first time in nine years. They have continued to tour sporadically since then, and have augmented their catalogue further with the release of the compilations Electrically Possessed [Switched On Vol 4] in 2021, and Pulse Of The Early Brain [Switched On Vol 5] in 2022.
