Ai tham sân si? – Who is greedy, angry, and ignorant?

Chào anh chị em,

Trong tương tác giữa ta và người chung quanh, ta thường gặp vấn đề này: “Tên này sao tham lam và bủn xỉn quá. Kèo nài từng đồng. Bực quá, chịu không nổi. Mai mốt chắc phải ngưng làm ăn với hắn.”

Dĩ nhiên khi ta nói thế, có nghĩa là ta không tham lam và bủn xỉn. Anh chàng kia mới là người tham lam bủn xỉn.

Nhưng mình (TĐH) không chắc về chuyện đó: (1) Mình thật là không tham lam và bủn xỉn, và anh chàng kia tham lam bủn xỉn? (2) Hay, cả hai đều tham lam và bủn xỉn, đấu đá với nhau? (3) Hay, mình tham lam và bủn xỉn và anh chàng kia thì không?

Thực là khó chắc chắn, vì chúng ta có khuynh hướng thấy mình là thiên thần, và chỉ có người khác là ác quỷ.

Làm sao để phân biệt được sự thật đây?

Đêm về, trước khi ngủ, ngồi lặng yên, Thiền một chút. Ôn lại chuyện hồi chiều, “Quán” trái tim mình, và hỏi: “Câu chuyện hồi chiều, mình có tham sân si không vậy?”

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In the interactions between us and the people around us, we often encounter this problem: “This guy is so greedy and stingy. He haggles for every penny. It’s so annoying, I can’t stand it. I’ll probably have to stop doing business with him in the future.”

Of course, when we say that, it means we are not greedy and stingy. The other guy is the greedy and stingy one.

But I (TĐH) am not sure about that: (1) Am I really not greedy and stingy, and the other guy is greedy and stingy? (2) Or, are we both greedy and stingy, fighting with each other? (3) Or, am I greedy and stingy and the other guy is not?

It’s really hard to be sure, because we tend to see ourselves as angels, and only other people are devils.

How do we know the truth?

At night, before going to bed, sit quietly, meditate a little. Review the story of the afternoon, “observe” your heart, and ask: “In the story of the afternoon, was I greedy, angry, and ignorant?”

Observe your heart.
