Diversity Speaker on Diversity Explosion Across America
As a diversity speaker I know a diversity explosion is occurring across America. You don't have to see far beyond your nose to recognize the diversity explosion occurring in our midst.
The racial and ethnic demographic is changing, a power shift is occurring and as a diversity speaker I can affirm society is learning (although some stiff necked folks still are resisting). Unfortunately not everybody is celebrating, nor embracing the diversity explosion. But much good amid this diversity explosion is happening!
Not your typical diversity speaker, I have traveled to 68 countries, lived overseas and also in Queens County, New York (the most diverse county in the United States).
Thus I'm not just a top heavy academic writing about the diversity explosion, nor merely a motivational speaker seeking to milk and make merchandise of the last fad or trend on the speaking circuit.
Truly a diversity speaker, I also studied global affairs at NYU in grad school. Moreover I certainly have experienced a diversity explosion and life-changing interactions on a global scale via my own life.
Before becoming a diversity speaker, I worked at Ground Zero in NYC during 9-11; helped rebuild a home at the tsunami epicenter in Indonesia; comforted victims of genocide in Rwanda; spoke to leaders in East Timor during the war; inspired students and monks in Myanmar; promoted peace and reconciliation in Pakistan; developed leaders deep in the bush of rural Africa where villagers had never before seen a white man; and fed the hungry in impoverished Haiti.
As for the diversity explosion occurring across America, the Brookings Institute reports the new racial demographics are remaking America [http://www.brookings.edu/research/boo...].
As the white populace and baby boomers age, robust growth is occurring among previously classified minority groups. In Orlando, Florida where I was born and live, whites are no longer the majority, but account for about 49% of the populace.
According to William Frey of the Metropolitan Policy Program, 'Hispanic and Asian groups now account for all the growth in the nation’s youth population. As this younger multi-ethnic generation grows up, the nation’s labor force and electorate will be transformed.'
Thus pattern and power shifts are occurring, traditional patterns thereby reversing. The historical migration northward is now heading south.
Ravi Agrawal of CNN reports, nearly half of all new citizens live in the three states of California, Florida, and New York.
Fareed Zakaria, host of CNN's Global Public Square, calls our attention to the fact that '62% of permanent-resident visas in Canada are based on skills;' whereas 'in the U.S. only 13% green cards granted because of talent.'
While this diversity explosion and all of its ramifications in society, the economy and industry are occurring; America is not as much of a “melting pot" in some parts of the country.
Racism, division, a white supremacy mentality and bigotry still exist in states nowhere near salt-water (oceans and the Gulf of Mexico) and still among a few people in racially diverse cities and communities.
A diversity explosion does not do away with racism, but it does force and compel a greater degree of cross-cultural understanding and multi-ethnic awareness to sustain your business and standing in politics and community.
Ironically in the future, some racist whites now aging may find the very people they used to hate caring for them in the health care industry, nursing homes and in ways they never before did foresee.
Thus as a diversity speaker I educate, awake, and reconcile people so they can love unconditionally, celebrate diversity, embrace the uniqueness of individuality and humanity, and ultimately be a better human being capable of better connecting and working with others to build a legacy.
The diversity explosion revolutionizing our country is here. If you are still living with your head in the sand, take a look in the White House and see that it has finally got some color in it.
