Cession vs Secession

DID YOU KNOW THAT:
Cession and Secession are two different things.

“Cession” is when one country transfers its territory, property, or rights to another. It can happen because of a sale agreement: like the Russian Empire did with Alaska, when Russians sold Alaska to the USA for $7,2 million in 1867. Or it can happen when the country loses the war and the winner gets part of the loser’s territory: like it was with Germany and Hungary after two World Wars and can happen now with Ukraine.

And “Secession” is when part of the country decides to split from the rest and create its state or become a part of another country. This decision can be made during the referendum by the people’s vote. “Secession” is like a divorce, when one party decides to split and stay independent or re-marry.

Some analysts question: will Transcarpathia secede from Ukraine and marry Hungary, using the current situation? Transcarpathia or in Hungarian - Kárpátalja, is a Hungarian historical territory located in the western part of Ukraine.
