I am currently reading Nancy Warren’s “A Cream of Passion“, book #7 in the Great Witches Baking Show. Having read a few earlier books in the series, I’m familiar with some of the background, but this volume provides ample context for newcomers to grasp the baking contest and Poppy’s quest to find her birthmother. This delightful series uniquely blends culinary cozy mystery with paranormal elements, as Poppy has the ability to see and communicate with ghosts. It is a lighthearted mystery, despite the poisoning murder of the man who was supposed to host her for a dinner of chanterelle mushrooms. Poppy must call on her wits, former fellow contestants, and ghostly friends to help her to unravel the mystery behind this crime. Full of descriptions of delightful desserts and charming English countryside.
Pops, you’re doing that thing again. The one where you look all dreamy and stop listening.
Nancy Warren, A Cream of Passion

Tempers are fraying and the cream is melting as summer temperatures hit the competition tent at Broomewode in the UK just in time for patisserie week. With only four contestants left, the pressure is mounting in the race to be chosen the best amateur baker in the UK. Poppy’s working hard to find out who her parents were and what happened to them even as she’s trying to become a more accomplished witch, so she definitely doesn’t have time for romance. Then someone dies and it looks like a crime of passion. Can she unmask a killer before she’s the one who gets creamed?
