Leonard Lake's Diary Part 3
Leonard Lake Diary 3
Ed’s Note: It’s now February, 1983 and Leonard Lake is getting antsy. He is anxious to start his `Miranda project’ but he hasn’t yet found the perfect spot to launch the operation. He is looking for a place in the country that’s secluded and very private to act out his grisly fantasies. He begins a number of ‘ops’ or operations to steal drugs and valuables that he can turn to cash to fund the project and he begins soliciting women. He videotapes the TV movie The Collector, based on the John Fowles novel that sparked his macabre scheme.
TUESDAY 1 FEB 1983
One month of this. Dull, dull, dull. Ah well. Lunch at 18th. No Angela. Laundry. Saw Fern at hospital. She gave me a Ground Hog’s Day present. Sweet. Signed up for Telepatch. Will move on this soon.
FRIDAY 4 FEB 1983
No entries for the past days simply because boredom has overcome boredom. This morning I set off for Novato to establish a new post office box. This one will replace the old and tomorrow I’ll start official address change. This will be an interim device but should serve for a few months. I must leave this city. I have to return to the country not only for my own security and peace of mind, but even more, the privacy to create a true base of operations. The country, with an adjacent slope of suitable size for the construction of an underground base. There is unfortunately a necessary sequence to this plan. First, I must have transportation. Removed to the countryside, obviously I’ll need a way to get supplies, and since construction materials will be required, a truck is the only acceptable vehicle. With a move, a truck, and a suitable piece of earth, I can peacefully spend my hours moving earth and building an underground shelter. The effort towards this end will come to thus: 1) Vehicle, preferably a truck but car might do, at least for recon 2) Suitable house with proper earth slope / drainage 3) Establishment of suitable line of females to help cohabitate some (Telepatch works towards this end). We commit the rest to fortune.
SATURDAY 5 FEB 1983
Connected with Angela. Results unknown. M spent a lot of time with me this evening. To what end?
SUNDAY 6 FEB 1983
Moved out early to mom’s and then to (Gault or Gram’s). Spent day at Gram’s. Home. Wrote “Donald” letter for mom. Mail tomorrow from Lake County. MONDAY 7 FEB 1983
Lunch with Toni. Movie (The Entity -- very poor) with mom. She got Don’s letter. Fab mail service.
TUESDAY 8 FEB 1983
Nothing day.
FRIDAY 11 FEB 1983
Plans arrived for urban car. It seems too urban. Don’t believe it would be suitable over the long haul. Talked to Frank (the landlord) and may adjust rental situation. Laundry. Received notice from Bay Guardian that a letter (from my ad) was waiting for me. Traveled to fetch it simply to find it was from a gay male. What a waste. Spent some time with Sonya, then the rest of the household. They were bombing fleas upstairs. Continuing my TV series “The Winds of War”, recorded “The Time Machine”. If the urban car won’t do I’ll have to arrange some other form of transportation. Again the basic problem. Transportation is required for country living, country living is required for secure base. If it were only possible to establish such a base here in the city. The idea of a hidden base here intrigues me, but I can’t really see it happening. Perhaps I’ll find a way.
SATURDAY 12 FEB1983
Sonya wanted to go out and “do something” so we went out to Fisherman’s Wharf. She is fun to be with, enjoyable to talk to, and I had a good time. Home, cooked fish dinner, and TV in the evening.
SUNDAY 13 FEB 1983
Again, Sonya wants to go out. To the beach this time. To Toni’s house to reclaim Intellivision. May take Toni’s boys out next weekend. Dinner at home with Sonya, Trotter & M. TV. Drafted letter to Cricket. (Arrow referencing next page).
MONDAY 14 FEB 1983
Valentines Day. Letter to Cricket. Thought of Beth. Sigh. Worked with Trotter cleaning lumber out of the basement. Much other trash as well. Improved matters greatly cleanwise. He and I talked some on matters of mutual interest. Housing & such. Called Patty, she needs cash so I may move out for a weeks op tomorrow night. Tried for a woman today but Telepatch was not operating.
(VALENTINES DAY LETTER TO CRICKET)
Dearest Cricket, I consider your father a fool and a liar, turning his back and his honor on someone who cared for him, would work for him, and loved his daughter beyond all reason. Still.... Sigh, I liked dummy. Tell the old fool I wish him well and hope he gets better. As for your fears. I hate to sound like a broken record, but simply because you broke your vows, mine were to death. Neither you nor your mother will ever want for necessities as long as I am operational. Even beyond that, you are provided for. Transfer any and everything you have no use for. The rifle, the chemicals, the storage tubes, again, anything. I expect nothing, I’d appreciate whatever is returned. I assume you have the VCR now. Send me the brand name, model #, features and the price you want. If not sold, I still may have a buyer for you. I may have another task for you. On Wednesday evening this coming, call my mother. She may have a box with instructions for you. If interested, pick it up. As ever, my best to your mother. (Signed) L
TUESDAY 15 FEB 1983
Out of bed slow. Cleaned more of the garage. It is actually looking clean out there. Worked with Trotter on ??????. Connected with Telepatch finally. Tom set me up with two ladies no less, DAGNEY and RITA. Will get together with at least one of them Friday. M was bothersome all afternoon. Want to be polite but am going to get firm with her. Picked up car from Patty. Committed now to six days of action without any real urge to go. Still, if I’m going to start womanizing I’d better get out and get some ops under my pocketbook. Chatted with Sonya.
WEDNESDAY 16 FEB 1983
Off to Highland Oaks (Storage Center). Brought down everything, $30 refund. Spent much of day in Novato area checking available housing for out of city / base of operation location. Don’t have enough liquid capital for such a venture yet. Home. Unpacked. Lady came by to take over Jane’s old room. Very classy. Her name was Tori. Left around 2200 for Greenfield op.
THURSDAY 17 FEB 1983
Arrived Greenfield stage area 0030. six mile walk in. No moon. Heavy clouds. Slept in usual place. Awoke around 0900. Stayed in bed until noon. Heavy rains on and off. When rains cleared, heavy and low fog. Checked out number of possible targets. All occupied, all buttoned up against weather. Disappointing. Picked up approximately $20 worth of loose goods. Barely covered expenses. Home around 1730. Daylight extraction from area. Difficult. Dirty, wet, heavy rain on and off. Shower. Trotter off for two days. M left house to get away from the bug spray. Sonya out looking for ????. May have place to myself (good). With luck Dagney and Rita will be over. Drove to Buttler’s, picked up video equipment, tapes, $150 for dope. Go to bank tomorrow. Take out Chinese dinner. Tori called 2250. Surprise! Enjoyed talking with her. She hyped me to rearrange room for tomorrow’s hopeful adventure. To sleep 0100 Friday. Op a waste. Must work closer to weather next time.
FRIDAY 18 FEB 1983
Went to bank for deposit. $900 in account now. Paid phone bill and last newspaper ad. Went to Fern’s to pick up letter from Cricket. Key / info for Clement St. op. Took Sonya out to Crown Room for drinks and Japan Town for Chinese. She’s fun, enjoyable & good company.
SATURDAY 19 FEB 1983
Sonya and I to bank for $100 withdrawal then to Marin Flea Market. Went driving, beach, etc. Took Toni’s boys out to Golden State Park. Home. Dinner. Tired. Collector @ 2300 TONIGHT. RECORD. Ah, “THE COLLECTOR”. Has it really been near 20 years I’ve carried this fantasy? And Miranda… how fitting. My lovely little village in Humboldt, my lovely little prisoner of the future. I suppose in my way I am the same wimp as the “hero”, and in my way just as crazy. I have no doubt that we wimps have been compensating for our inabilities since the dawn of history. Sad really, still, how can we die if we never really live? They have to sleep sometime. Forgot to mention, 18 Feb. Dagney & Rita didn’t connect. Try again Monday 20 Feb. Doom came out like this: (Sketch of bedroom layout)
SUNDAY 20 FEB 1983
Laundry. Shopping. Reading (Rebel In Time). Dagney called. She will (hopefully) come over at 1100 tomorrow. Over to mom’s for Fern’s party. Good Time. Nora & Patty’s boyfriend (Danny) there. Made date to treat them all to movie tomorrow night. Keeping image of big spender.
MONDAY 21 FEB 1983
Up early. Cleaned room, off to bank (withdrew $100). Dagney over at 1150. So-so. Young, somewhat simple. Saggy boobs, stretch marks, but pretty. Very good head. Took her to lunch and home. Viewed video tape. Alright but nothing special. Will turn in film and file both stills and tape. Returned car to Patty, picked up Nora enroute. Took mom, Nora, Patty and Danny to “Tootsie”. Much fun. Home. TV.
TUESDAY 22 FEB 1983
Over to Nora’s and weeded for hours. Lunch there. Home. Dinner. Lady named Susan called about modelling. Didn’t sound very promising. May meet her tomorrow. TV. Chatted with Sonya. Met two potential housemates. Both pretty un-inspirational.
WEDNESDAY 23 FEB 1983
Bad day. Nothing. Dinner with Nora. Word is that new housemate will be lady named Bailly. Unimpressive. Susan called again this evening. Appointment to meet at 1330 tomorrow at Zimo. Recorded `Patton.’ Great Movie.
THURSDAY 24 FEB 1983

FRIDAY 25 FEB 1983
Made arrangements with Cricket for op. Video taped phone call. Met Cricket at 1800. Op was no go & scrubbed. Molested Cricket for about four hours.
SATURDAY 26 FEB 1983
Nothing day.
SUNDAY 27 FEB 1983
Nothing day. The inactivity of these days presses upon most of my daily thoughts. I need a base, for that I need a new location away from the city. For that I must have a truck. Within this month I will try to act on the need. I have about $700 in the bank now. I should have in addition this month: $400 (Monthly check) $200 (Dope from 😎 $330 (Check from Harry [hopefully]) Must make every effort to generate additional funds from dope, sale of surplus items, etc. With luck I might be able to put together $2000 by the end of the month.
MONDAY 28 FEB 1983
Out early in the rain. Yucky weather. Staked out mom’s house in her car for a few hours awaiting mailman and possible check. No go. Weather predicted again for tomorrow. Wednesday will try bus to Novato & possible run to Lake County. Arrived home $10 poorer (lunch & transportation). Did Laundry. Unproductive day but a least kept busy. M wanted to chat. Dull. Watched `Final MASH’ series. Got back some photographs. My `Models II’ book shows some shots of ladies in my last establishment. Also got in some shots of Dagney. More awaiting development. Let history note these shots for life in these lonely days. The ladies are pretty, but meaningless. Tomorrow is projected another “nothing day”.
