The shadow of the sundial
lengthens on the lawn.
From a visit to a mansion
that memory is torn.
The silence of the nursery
deepens in the shade.
You stand and look through a window
from where you never played.
The ivy on the orchard wall
gleams the darkest green,
but you cannot go back to where
you have never been.
An old man in a photograph
reclines in a chair,
smokes a pipe, reads a newspaper,
unaware you are there.
The cobwebs on a wheelbarrow
in the garden shed,
and dust on spades and seed bags
tells you of times long fled.
Before the car and railway train,
they walked on this grass,
but you cannot step like Alice
through the looking glass.
The shadow of the sundial
lengthens on the lawn.
