I was born in 1952 in Liverpool, England, have a degree in English literature from Newcastle University, and I have been writing songs, stories and poems since I was twelve. In October, 2016, I married Anahit Arustamyan, poet of Armenia, in her home city, Yerevan, Armenia. Angel War is my first published novel. I was thirty four when I first began to write it in 1986 and I was sixty when I completed the final version of it in September, 2012. As it took me twenty six years to write, I felt I owed it to my story to get it published. Angel War was chosen as one of the finalists in The Wishing Shelf Independent Book Awards for 2013, I am very surprised and happy to report. The Gold, Silver and Bronze medallists were announced in April, 2014 at ...more

Do you mean how did I actually feel about writing Angel War? If so, I felt there was a story that needed to be told, inspired by the "war in heaven", mentioned in Chapter Twelve of the Book of Revelation, and I knew no one was going to tell it, at least as how I imagined it to have happened. I felt it was a serious, daunting task I had set myself, but when it was completed, one that was well worth doing. In total contrast to Angel War, which is a serious book, rooted in The Bible, my new book, Klubbe the Turkle and the Golden Star Coracle, I wrote to amuse myself and, hopefully, others, too. When I finished my new book, I felt satisfied that it was funny, with a bird brain humour, which I like. Hopefully, those who read it will think it is funny, too.(less)

The Bible only says that the war happened, but not why, so I decided to write my own version of the war and its aftermath. My book is fundamentally the biography of Azel, the Prince of the White Castle of the Angels of Light, who from an early age plans what he calls his great rebellion against the Father. It is he who begins the war in the angel lands. After his defeat in the war, sat on his Citadel throne, in his exile, he uses planet Earth as a battlefield in his war against the Father, from the time of the Garden of Eden unto the 1980's, during the time of the Cold War. My book could be called a work of fantasy fiction, rooted in The Bible.(less)

“There was always life and life always wanted to live.”
Philip Dodd, Angel War

“Remember, whatever happens, look up, and you will see me," said Jesus. "I am with you like the dawn upon the mountains.”
Philip Dodd, Angel War

“This is my song for Gabriel,
The Angel of the Word,
I've sung to you so many times,
This time I may be heard.
I sing to you from fellowship,
Past times I sang alone,
But now I can extend my love
To wood and air and stone.
Your golden wings have cradled me,
Your voice has made me kneel,
Your actions turn the universe,
Your wisdom spins the wheel.

This is my song for Abraham,
The shepherd of mankind,
You led your tribe out from Canaan,
And none were left behind.
O, come, fulfil your prophecies,
And say the war is won,
Must I wait in vales of visions,
And leave my song undone?”
