Are you addicted to reading smut?
Do you feel lost when there are no new titles from your favorite smut author?
Does reading smut send you spiraling down, and you don’t want to read anymore, hitting a reading slump?
Has a palette cleanser (simple romance or super boring non-fiction that talks about reality) ended up sending you back to your smut rut?
If the answer to the above questions is yes, my friend, you have Smut Dependency Disorder. Don’t worry; help is NOT on the way. Yes, I know. Sorry. I hate to break this to you; I’m just a diagnostic person with zero solutions.
Even so, let’s delve deeper into SDD. And yes, I coined SDD.
When I was a little girl, young female readers used to borrow Mills & Boons from our neighborhood library. When I grew up, I had to find out what the deal with these books was, so I, too, borrowed them. And oh my God! It turned out to be a smutty treat.
Of course, it couldn’t hold my attention for long because I was into video games (the one with joysticks, remember?).
Although I parted ways with good old Mills & Boons, girls my age continued exploring them. I wondered why? There were many other options to stimulate the brain or increase the knowledge base if nothing else. Why would one choose to read something that arouses you without a conclusion? Except for the fact that you may get off while reading it.
I got the answer fairly quickly to my inquisition.
You see, procreation is the foremost force of our creation. Choosing a suitable mate is essential for that innate endeavor. Following this logic, the obvious question is, how does smut help in that? Well, it doesn’t help in the literal sense. But at least you know what your ideal mate would be like. I mean, the term ‘book boyfriend’ exists for a reason!
There’s another bright side to reading smut. It can never turn into reality. The hunt for the next high starts from a book; the ideal story brews inside the reader’s head until the next emerges. Now, we can’t ignore the expense associated with it, can we?
Time and money are the most significant detriment in our lives. And if you think spending it on reading smut is the best you can do... go for it. Our society is that of consumerism, and 99% of the people are consumers. What they demand is what’s supplied.
Happy reading!
