I like newsletters, I use Omnivore to gather them in one place and centralise my "deep reading" activities. However with the rise of Substack I can't help to be a bit sad lately as each newsletter seem to be another attempt at monetization.
I miss the old web, the personal one, where people wrote and share because they wanted to. When we wrote because we had something on our minds or hearts, when each blog or newsletter didn't need a "suscribers only section".
Moreover I feel that most of the newsletters pricing is totally disconnected from any sense of reality, most of them costing more than any news subscription.
Not everything has to be monetised, not every single source of joy or personal creation must be creating a new stream of income.
