Do you want your child to respect you?

Of course, you do.

But you can’t just ‘want’ respect. You must EARN it.

So how do you earn respect?

Whenever your child is not respectful
Use the formula RESPECT.

R – REFLECT on your own behavior
Stop and think about what you did to make your child disrespect you.
Did you ORDER your child instead of REQUESTING?
Did you IGNORE them instead of INCLUDING them?
Very often, without thinking – we disrespect our children.
Recognize what your are doing and stop

E – EMPATHISE with your child’s behavior.
Children never want to disrespect us.
Try to understand why they are behaving the way they are.
What is it that they really want.
When they feel that you are trying to understand them instead of shutting them down, they will respect you.

S – SELF-CONTROL
Control your own behavior.
If you shout, your child will shout too

P – POLITE
Use polite language and be respectful when you communicate.
That will make your child use respectful words too.

E – EMPOWER
Once you know what your child wants – show them how to get it the right way.
Show them how to use their words and their voice to sound respectful while asking for what they need.

C – COLLABORATE
Stay on your child’s team.
If they think you are only there to stop them from doing what they want to – they will consider you their enemy. And that will lead to disrespect.
When you are on their team they will respect you.

T – TRUST
Be trustworthy.
Promise only what you can do. And do what you have promised.
If your child can’t trust you they won’t be able to respect you.

Type RESPECT and start following these steps to change the whole atmosphere in your house and make it respectful

Most adults who demand respect – do none of the above things. Don’t be one of them.

Share this so that those adults who expect respect from your child see this.
