Fame or Obscurity?

Our society is built on a collective framework with individual contributions, fostering competition. We encourage people to run harder than the others by recognizing their achievements. Do we then advocate attracting attention to ourselves? In the wild, every animal stays hidden unless it is mating period. Contrary to our society, blending in the surroundings is best for survival in nature.

Similar to nature, standing out in the world has many negatives. People get jealous or obsessed; they try to take advantage of you, or they might even try to harm you. Even then, we can't help but want to shine. Don't we teach our kids from the start to be the best at what they do? And who decides you are the best? It is validation from the others around you that endorses your worth. And that undoubtedly puts the spotlight on you.

We all desire fame until we realize its drawbacks by experiencing it. Or we burn out trying to be famous. You could be running from the law and choose to be obscure. Or perhaps you are an introvert, going about your life doing the minimum to be a contributing citizen without drawing unnecessary attention.

In a world where you must constantly prove your worth, would you live a life of obscurity or desire fame?
