Happy New Year!
Organizing our lives based on the artificial idea of ‘time’ tells me it is 2024. New Year, as per the Gregorian calendar, has no planetary significance. Many other calendars have a more meaningful context concerning us when marking the new year. A Lunar Calendar is controversially known to be a practice that is more than 30,000 years old. Definitely, 8,000 BC old for sure! It interferes with our mood due to the moon’s gravitational impact on water; the human body is 60% water. This calendar dates seasons, clueing farmers on sowing/harvesting crops.
No matter which calendars you follow, we unsurprisingly conform to ideas like clockwork. Predictability gives us respite from the unknown future we can't foretell.
A new year is not the only thing we mutually recognize as a normal shift. Our perception of change has boxed our lives, and we adhere to this made-up tracker called time. Our curiosity for life is tied to the fact that we have limited time. We follow a routine to ensure a positive outcome. We attach deadlines to our aspirations to accommodate as much as possible before we run out of time. Increasingly pushing ourselves forces us to find outlets to recharge ourselves with milestones/holidays by associating them with happiness. Some spend needlessly on weddings, birthdays, promotions, getting into a reputed college, securing a job, etc., to draw happiness.
Aren’t these the things that further chains us? They set the foundation for higher expectations. A cutoff date tied to them could be tethering and their successful completion unshackling - ‘successful’ being the operative word. Goals are thus a means to be an accomplished citizen of our society. On the grounds that we never only have one goal, many things run in parallel, keeping us busier than the day before. That’s why we celebrate little happiness in between to keep ourselves sane.
To me, any celebration is an escape. An outlet to feel we still have some freedom from the regular rhythm of time that chains us.
