I WILL keep writing! It is just harder than I imagined to get going! TOUGH BUSINESS!
Thanks for the vote of confidence!

The publisher and skill at publicity also plays a role. My book The Rebuilding Year went to #1 on Amazon LGBT the first day it was published, and while I like to think some of that was readers beginning to trust my writing to be good, a lot was advance publicity, advance reviews etc by Samhain. (My MLR books have not done that, although I have some hope for the upcoming third Life Lessons.)
But in this genre, word of mouth is also BIG. People buy based on recommendations from friends, and advance copies that generate word of mouth especially in the right places like Jessewave. And certain books and certain authors catch the public imagination. A catchy easy-to-remember title helps. Author involvement elsewhere (like Damon) helps. It's partly the quality of the book but not entirely. (For example I know of fantasy magic-school books that are better than Harry Potter, but much more obscure.)
I'm always glad that my book income is supplement (welcome supplement with two kids needing college tuition) but not bread-and-butter. So I don't have to obsess over sales. It must be tougher for those who need every sale for income. It sounds like you're fortunate enough to also not be one of those.
Congrats on making some best-of lists, BTW. It can be nice to see one's books pop up on those. (Although voting is a conundrum for an author. For example - I have books I'd like to support, but often I have my own books on those same lists. If I don't vote for mine, I look self-deprecating; if I do, I look self-promoting. So I've stopped voting mostly. Sorry.)

I don't really know how to self promote. So, I throw it out there to "vote" because personally I DO look at lists to think about the "kind" of book I want to read next. The ones at the tops of those lists are there for a reason. I don't mean I want everyone to say I'm #1 (that would be stupid) but to even get voted on at a readers list as #7 still puts my name out there somewhere. If someone has only read 3 tear jerkers and liked mine, it doesn't seem unreasonable to throw it on the pile.
Amazon... I'm not use too many people have listed their reviews of WLINE there. I wish they would! That would be cool!
I AM self-deprecating. Blog followers know this.
and R.B.... woohoo! thank you!

I look at the lists too, and I love when people support my books. I just got myself tangled up with voting/not voting/putting mine first/third/last on my own votes... so I quit voting. But I hope readers still do because I use the lists a lot.
Amazon reviews... I don't get it. I have books with 83 ratings here and not a single review on Amazon. I guess there are authors with a clearer grasp of how to work the system, and I admire them, but don't have the motivation to emulate them.

First of all, you have at least one fan. I loved the story. Even though it did not end quite the way I was hoping, there is definately a potential HEA. Your story was engaging and kept me interested from start to finish. I am looking forward to the sequel as well as My Roommate's A Jock. So don't sell yourself short.
Second, you can call me Dude if you want. Try not to get too irritated if I giggle like a little girl when you do though...tee-hee-hee
And finally (these people do expect me to generate work today) keep on writing - and I'll keep coming back for more.
