Of darkness and light

(Nimue, review)

This poetry collection by Despoina Kemeridou captures the anguish of toxic relationships. If you’ve ever loved someone who undermined your mental health you’ll recognise the emotional landscapes of these poems. It may be cathartic, and you may find that seeing someone else go through similar things helps put your own experiences into perspective.

There’s a lot to be said for sharing maps of the dark places, and this text is very much that. what I felt most keenly when I was reading it, is how helpful it would have been to be able to put it into several other people’s hands. To be able to say ‘this is how it is for me’ and offer someone else’s words would have been useful indeed.

I think the people who most need to read this are the ones who have not know anguish and torment. If you’ve not been in hell, if you’ve not loved where that love was poisonous to you, then this is a good and safe opportunity to understand something that far too many of us go through.
