Barnstormers Issue #5 Review
Look, there were only two ways the five-part comic book series “Barnstormers” by Scott Snyder and Tula Lotay was going to end. Sure, there could have been an unexpected third way, but the creators went for the Hollywood cliche. Issue 4 sets the stage for a slightly predictable climax. But as I’ve been saying in past reviews, Tula Lotay’s dreamy pastel artwork makes “Barnstormers” worth the ride.

In the finale, flying daredevils Bix and Tilly hope for a daring getaway. However, with both cops and bounty hunters after their lives, an escape isn’t going to be easy. While there was barely any mid-air action, readers finally get a generous spread of barnstorming in the climactic events. Snyder and Lotay could have gone for a longer series or at least added a few more pages in each issue. Thirty pages are just too quick to get invested in the characters or care about what’s happening to them.
Overall, “Barnstormers” is the kind of comic book series that’s exciting while you read it, but the story is pretty forgettable. Since there was a long gap between the release of issue 4 and 5, I had to reread the last issue because I didn’t remember anything. That’s the only reason why the short length of 30 pages proved to be a boon; at least you don’t have to spend too much time finding out what happens.
It’s a 3.5 on 5 from me.
