Into the Dreaming: the missing Dageus portraits

Over the years, many of you have written in to ask why you never got to see the two paintings Dageus painted of himself to warn future generations of Keltar that he was dark, so if he showed up on their doorstep one day, they'd be forewarned. I just got my comp copies of Into the Dreaming, which contains The Dark Highlander, Lite my first try at telling Dageus' story. (There's also a foreword in the book that explains why I wrote it twice.) In the Lite version, Dageus doesn't live in Manhattan, the heroine, Elizabeth is very different than Chloe, and I had a completely different strategy for saving him. When I threw it away 250 pages in and started over, I had to be able to see it new, which meant recycling as little as possible—which meant details, scenes, tensions, characters I used to shape the Lite version never made it into the Dark. The paintings were one of many things that went into the trash with the manuscript.

I was thumbing through my comp copy and was delighted to realize those paintings have finally made it to print, LOL! This is an excerpt from Into the Dreaming, the special hardcover edition. (It goes on sale April 24th.)

Elizabeth is unwrapping a package, tearing off strips of paper that protect the painting within…

She bared more of it in strips. A grassy knoll. A night sky. A brilliant purple and black tartan, that ended above powerfully muscled calves, and clung to lean hips. More of that sculpted stomach and chest. Strong arms and broad, powerful shoulders. All the makings of a woman's most primitive fantasy…

The laughter died abruptly in her throat as she tore off the last remaining strip, revealing the magnificent man's face.

Er…faces, she amended uneasily. For the man had two, and the breath hitched in her throat.

She stared in silence for a long, long time, feeling something stir within her that made her deeply uneasy. Curiosity. Fascination. An intense unbidden flash of sensual awareness.

For heaven's sake, she chided herself, blowing out an uneasy breath, it's only a picture!

But it was more than that. He radiated barely harnessed, fantastic energy. The man—and he was every inch raw male, dripping dark, intoxicating sexuality—had been painted standing on a grassy slope, with silhouettes of standing stones behind him. The night sky was the backdrop; a velvety canvas pierced by glittering stars. Clad in only a kilt, he was magnificent, with skin like golden velvet poured over steel, a sculpted physique, and silky black-as-midnight hair that spilled down his back and over one shoulder. He chiseled face was exotic, almost impossibly beautiful.

But the beauty ended abruptly, or rather, to the left it ended, for the man's face turned both ways. One face turned right, breathtakingly handsome, with glittering golden eyes, firm pink lips, an arrogant blade of a nose and a strong jaw. Stunningly male, stunningly sensual, it made places low in her belly feel tight.

The other face turned to the left was evil incarnate…

Didi Hi Karen, is this book a different story from those in Tapestry anthology?

ᑭᑌᑎƳᗩ [Punya Reviews...] I'm just confused over the whole thing! :/

message 3: by Pyper (new)

Pyper Diangelo ^-^ awesome

message 4: by Meli GM (new)

Meli GM So confused....I have to check my spread-sheet to compare all these NEW information! = s

ᑭᑌᑎƳᗩ [Punya Reviews...] Lol. It would be weird to read another book for Dageus with a new heroine (Elizabeth?) this time. I don't think I've ever read anything like this before. I'd rather KMM wrote something new, a new series, with some new characters and so on. But, I love her Highlanders so gonna check it out.

Karen I can't hardly wait until this comes out! I am so ready to hit the book store and buy my copy! Also Karen do you think that you will make this into an audiobook with Phil Gigante & Natalie Ross? I sure hope so I have all of the "Highlander" and "Fever" books and the same for all of the audiobooks! Love, Love LOVE them all! Please keep writing about the "Highlander's" and the "Fever" series! Love your work, Karen

message 7: by Bella (new)

Bella I will devour anything KMM puts out for us. You totally ROCK, Karen...no matter what you do. <3

message 8: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Lopes HI Karen, i'm glad the book came out, so this way maybe it will also get published in my country...
We're gonna get all 7 from the Highlander series, but u know fans, once we like them we want everything, and unfortunatly books with anthologies just don't really work... Cause the authors may belong to different editors here in Portugal :(

Lauren More Dageus? Yes Please :)

message 10: by Didi (new)

Didi This story already published before as one of stories in Tapestry anthology.
I guess it's republished as a single book this time, hence For the first time in hardcover, opening promo.

ᑭᑌᑎƳᗩ [Punya Reviews...] The novella in the anthology Tapestry is indeed Into the Dreaming. But the Dageus story is a different one. It's something KMM wrote and then decided not working and then re-wrote the one later published. In this version, she republished Into the Dreaming, with a lot of other things (her own publishing story etc.), which includes that previously-not-working Dageus story.

I skimmed through it. Since I've already read Into the Dreaming, I might only read the Dageus story later.

Anyway, this is what the blurb say:

This new edition of the novella contains more than 100 pages of bonus material, including:
• a deleted scene from Kiss of the Highlander
• a proposal for a never-published romance
• an alternate opening version of The Dark Highlander
• a sneak peek at art from the upcoming graphic novel Fever Moon

You're welcome. I can see why you were so confused. I didn't notice it in your comment but yes, she wrote Dagues's story with a different heroine in the not-working-version. lol :)

You're welcome. Pingle seems to have the clear explanation :). I've only read Tapestry myself and not really sure to take on this new Into the Dreaming. Don't want to mixed up Dageus in my mind. :D

message 14: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn There isn't anything about the Dark Highlander and have just finished reading it again along with all the whole series and would LOVE to have more Highlander books to read.

The story of Aedan and Jane remains the same, no changes there. There are just some extra stuff added, NOT into the story, as my comment above mentions. The Dageus story in this version wasn't working, so KMM re-wrote the whole thing which was finally published. I'd rather KMM published Beth and Duncan's book. Damn! I'd really love more of her Highlander series. :s

message 18: by Pamela (new)

Pamela The best thing I can say about this latest book of "Into the Dreaming" is all the bonus material. I especially liked the reasoning behind putting time travel and Fae into her Highland Series. Now it all falls into place. Her publishers were just not buying paranormal when she was writing, and some of her highlander books were just love stories.I adored her Fae, dark fever 5 book series, and am looking forward to ICED, her next project

message 19: by Bozana (new)

Bozana I would love to see what happens with the Seelie Queen and the Unseelie King... be nice to tie up the all the series together on the very end with a book about them and there is a story there, so much begging to be told. And it would be a wonderful conclusion, if you will.

But I do agree, I love more of the Highlander books and the time travelling aspect. I've read the whole series and really loved them.

I'm not into the Fever series but that's just me and personal tastes. I love Historical Romances and of course time travelling.

However, my sister loves both series and is eagerly awaiting for the new book and series, end of October.

Keep up the brilliant writing Karen. You have such wonderful imagination and creativity. I've read and reread your Highlander books so many times, that the spines of my paperback books, are becoming a little bit bent from wear! Lol! I'm really eager for more :-D

message 20: by Pamela (new)

Pamela I also have read all her highlander series. That is how I first became familiar with her work. I agree, she is a great writer and I hope she continues for many years to come..thanks for the comments!
