Book Review: First Kill by David Hagberg

Published in 2019. Thriller. In this book, the author goes back to the beginning of Kirk McGarvey’s career with the CIA. Fresh out of the Air Force, McGarvey had successfully completed his initial assignments with the Company, and now, had been assigned his first kill. In Chile, General Vargas is known as the Butcher, and the U.S. government wants him gone. However, the Russians are making inroads into Chile, hoping to swing the Chilean government over to them. A Russian diplomat named Baranov relocates from Mexico City just for that purpose. But through a mole at the CIA, he learns of McGarvey’s assignment, and the cat-and-mouse game begins.

I really enjoyed reading this novel and could hardly put it down as I tried to figure out how McGarvey could complete his mission when everyone knew he was coming. The Russians had told the Chileans, and word had circulated back to Washington. Everyone knew.

This is the first book by this author that I’ve read although he’s written over seventy novels. I’ll keep my eye out for them.
