Reading is a form of prayer
At least that is what George Saunders says:
“Reading is a form of prayer, a guided meditation that briefly makes us believe we’re someone else, disrupting the delusion that we’re permanent and at the center of the universe. Suddenly (we’re saved!) other people are real again, and we’re fond of them.”
What do you think?
I’m not sure I agree on all accounts. Reading is a wonderful experience that takes us out of ourselves, whether fiction or nonfiction. But I believe prayer is a little bit more than he discusses.
