Security Blankets
It’s summer and my boys’ vacation time is in full swing. This being the first summer where we are supposedly easing out of Covid, I can tell the kids are wanting to just get out and play. They are having friends over and they are sleeping over at friends houses. It’s a summer of learning and trying new things.
As I help them pack to sleep over by a friend, I can’t help but smile that they still want to bring over their stuffed animals. These little toys still provide them comfort. It got me thinking about our own security blankets. The things We don’t want to let go of in order to face our fears. It sounds silly but the truth is that even as adults we are scared a lot of the time. Perhaps the fears feel like a bigger deal— we worry about paying bills, losing our jobs, not being successful in our endeavors and making mistakes we might not recover from.
Our security blankets may take the form of excuses as to why we aren’t willing to take risks or reasons we see the unknown as a threat. But are these really comforts to us? Or are they keeping us from learning and growing? Only we can truly answer this question for ourselves but it at least deserves some honest thought.
Happy writing this week!
