THE “GHOST” IN THE GHOST
IN my Amazon-genre-bestseller, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor — https://www.amazon.com/dp/0999693859, now available in printed, digital and “free” audiobook format, I describe an encounter between the male and female protagonists in which one, while going to work, sends a “proxy self” to the other who has just awakened back at their domicile. Eh? What’s a “proxy self” you ask? Think of sending a loved one a greeting card, greeting message by phone, or text message (like “LOL”). Add plausible future technology like multi-sensory interactive distance holography and you have the ability to project a proxy self to another in full multi-sensory interactive holographic detail. Project an interactive holographic kiss, some sweet nothings and a warm embrace, and you have a decidedly passionate “as you awaken” morning soiree, sweeter than a rose, chocolate and mimosa, and decidedly more substantial than bacon, eggs, toast and jam on a morning tray.
Unbelievable? Tenga recently announced an “Illusion VR” that pairs a Samsung Gear VR headset with a haptic feedback suit (meant to simulate the feeling of human touch) — https://www.digitaltrends.com/computi... — and, remember, that’s already on today’s market!
And what of the implications? It’s said that the biggest gift to humanity is death. Mortality. It’s what is at the very heart of our all-too-human zest for life. It also means that, assuming not everyone wants to procreate in vitro, without sex, there would be no next generation. No more humanity. What would happen if one could, with appropriate permissions, enjoin digitally, interactively and holographically with another? A virtual full “Monty” so to speak?
Increasingly numerous “by-distance” relationships could certainly benefit (think, for example, one partner on Mars, the other on Earth). Population growth might finally slow down. The problems of unwanted pregnancy and abortion might no longer be relevant. Not that I’m personally touting Illusion VR or sex-via-the-internet. I would prefer to emphasize the non-sexual benefits of multi-sensory interactive holographic interaction, for example, replacing in-person school classrooms. Could possibly lead to no more wars? Or would it lead to darker prospects, like proxy assassination? New technology is what it is in the hands of the users (at least thus sayth with greatest authority weapons manufacturers). And, yes, I do prefer to believe in the overall goodness of humanity rather than its darker foreboding side.
