Writers and artists are put in the unique position of recording history. I’ve lived long enough to know that the old saying “what goes around, comes around” is true.

My grandmother was Austrian-Ukrainian and born in Ukraine. I remember her stories about when Ukraine was not part of Russia and that was before the Soviet Union. She came to America right before WWI and could not go home due to war.

My heart breaks seeing all those people running for their lives.

This is the time to be writing when emotions are high. When a character speaks to your heart, you have to portray the world through his or her eyes.

It is easy to get emotionally caught up in the unfolding war and its toll on humanity. But this is the time to use that pain in your heart and write about it.

When a person’s world is changing drastically, they are leaving everything they know and in many ways the people they love and trust. The scenery out their window which had always been comforting is now foreign. Every part of their life demands a decision like where to eat, sleep, and how to stay alive.

To borrow from the famous play A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, they will have to depend on the “kindness of strangers.”

A long time ago, I was called a scribe for my tribe. Everyone who puts their thoughts on paper or online text is. We record history. Sometimes we disguise it in fiction to make it more palatable. Sometimes we just state the actions. A young woman by the name of Anne Frank wrote in a diary.

Go forth and write so the next generation remembers. Be a world observer.

Truly,
-Susan
