For The Love Of…Not Giving Up by Artemis Crow

In the last few months I‘ve seen several posts from authors announcing that they were quitting writing. Every time, my heart flopped in my chest, the pain of their decision and what led up to it physically causing me pain because there are times in the past I wondered why I was trying to be a writer, trying to write books that someone might want to read, trying to succeed amid such a full field.

How could I possibly stand out? How could I sustain a career? How could I think I was good enough?

These questions and so many more filled me. The one truth I kept coming back to was this: I love writing. The challenge, the exciting moments when my brain clicks and I create a species or a world, when learn a mythology new to me. I love when a reader squees over my stories, I love making something out of nothing, but mostly, I love that I found my passion.

Maybe that’s why it hurts when people walk away. But, for them, walking away is a good thing. No doubt the tiny bit of pain I felt was nothing compared to theirs when they made the decision, to the emptiness they must have felt the next day, to the weight lifted, to the freedom they found to explore what else is out there.

Each of us must make choices about what we do, who we are…our why. Sometimes learning what feeds your soul is discovered early in life, for others it can take years or decades, for some finding their passion never comes. So, if you need to walk away, do it. Walking away isn’t giving up, it’s walking toward something even more wonderful, something that will fulfill you.

When I say to not give up, I’m not talking about what it is you do. I’m saying to not give up on yourself. If that means walking away from your job or from that which once made you happy but no longer does, follow your heart.

Have you walked away only to find yourself?

May your words flow freely,

Artemis
