What do authors read when they are not writing? I read history as part of the research for my books, and sometimes other romance authors. Other times you just want to cut loose and read something that is radically different and whimsical.

I don’t currently do book reviews. I’m just giving you an example of how it’s good to clear the cobwebs out of our brains from daily living and enjoy something beyond our usual reading material. I do enjoy some graphic novels. So this book was a natural “try me.” Not only is the prose humorous but so are the illustrations.

A long time ago, I studied with the famous children’s book author Francelia Butler. She was one of my professors at UCONN for a course in children’s literature. I met Maurice Sendak through her. Prof. Butler once told me that it is healthy for the brains of adults to read and watch cartoons regularly.

I think it is interesting that we adults will join gyms, jog, do yoga, and other physical activities to stay healthy but mostly we ignore the brain. When we come home, our bodies and brains are so exhausted, we veg in front of the TV. That is the perfect time to give the brain something fun and different. Rejuvenate yourself with cartoons, a graphic novel, or a humorous book like Pawmistry by Megan Lynn Kott.

This article has been cat-approved. My cat Buffy stared at it for several minutes without blinking. I had to blink.
